Players who were called up late

Tom Cairney from recent years. Strachan was too loyal to his favourites who were underperforming but kept ignoring this guy. Cairney really should have been given a a run of games to show what he could do.

With the benefit of hindsight, Berti Vogts probably should have picked Malky Mackay (who was then playing not too badly for Norwich) rather than Lee Wilkie to replace huffy Weir. Although at the time I'd have instinctively called for the younger Wilkie.

Vogts completely blanked Charlie Miller (who was capped once by Broon in a friendly) who was in good form for Dundee Utd and might have been a slightly better option than some of the other players he was picking at the time.

Totally agree with this, particularly as Ferguson made himself unavailable for both tournaments. Was there a reason for Hutchison not to be included?

I think he had a bit of a bad boy reputation in his younger career which might have dissuaded Brown from picking him.

Think story goes Brown went to watch him with a eye on getting him into the team around 95 when he was playing well for West Ham, but he had a habit of picking up yellow cards and got sent off in the game Brown attended.

Also had a reputation as a party go'er (think his name was "Budweiser" after some rather provocative photos of him on holiday surfaced), so can see why Brown was put off by him for a long time.

Graham Alexander won his first cap at 30.  He earned 40 caps in the next 7 years.

The amount of caps he won in his 30's suggests that he might have been useful to have about whilst he was in his 20's.

Agree, but he had spent almost all his career up to that point playing in League One and Two, and think when he was playing with Preston that was the highest league he had played in.

He is certainly one of the few "success" stories that Bertie took a punt on when he cast his net that bit further than what Craig Brown did (though given the riches that Brown had compared to other managers, there was not really any need to)

He only came to prominence when Preston got up to division one in 2000 (even then he only got his first cap two years later under Vogts).

Would've thought he'd have been the type Craig Brown would've been all over, good defensively and over 30! That said Gary Naysmith was the big young hope then in the full back area and he was pretty regular for Everton in that period.

Colin Calderwood didn't get his first cap until he was 30, had been at Spurs two years by that point.

Like Alexander, he is another one that spent most of his career playing in the English lower leagues with the likes of Mansfield and Swindon (who would eventually make the Premiership, but go straight back down and conceded something like 100 goals in a single season).

He really only got his chance with Scotland due to Craig Leveins injury problems (pretty much same way Colin Hendry got in as a result of Richard Gough going off in the huff after Portugal) as Brown had been building his defense around McKimmie, Boyd, McLaren, Levein and Hendry.... but Levein was replaced with Calderwood and McLaren with Craig Burley.
