I think the increase in our numbers was pretty predictable with the easing of restrictions.

But the English figures continue to baffle me. Although their schools have yet to return, they no longer have any restrictions at all south of the border. There is no requirement for masks indoors in England, unlike up here.

Although the English cases are rising, the rate of increase is much slower than ours.Given the complete absence of mitigations and restrictions there, why are the performing relatively better than us?

They might have had more herd immunity over the past year as we've had stricter, longer lockdowns? Meaning when we open up theres more chance of cases spiking?

Incidentally if you look into the news and more indepth reporting around the time and the inquiry. It was an issue with no local paediatric cardiac surgery and ECMO and that's what Professor Svigos was talking about in the clip. There was transfers to other hospital but the extra care needed due to covid outbreaks at the hospital limited choice of where they could go and a lack of funding meant they didn't have the facilities at their home state.

"In his evidence, Svigos, who is convenor of the WCH Alliance lobby group, said Adelaide was the only mainland capital city that did not have provision of paediatric cardiac surgery or a vital life-support machine known as Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Support Service, which replaces the function of the heart and lungs.

He said critically ill babies and children instead had to be transferred interstate.

“There are consequences, particularly in our current COVID-19 situation where the usual process of referral to the Melbourne cardiac unit is no longer tenable and referral to Sydney is on a case-by-case basis,” he said.

The Victorian premier says Melbourne’s COVID-19 lockdown did not play a role in the deaths of four babies at Adelaide’s Women’s and Children’s hospital.

The children, who required specialised cardiac care, would usually have been transferred to Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital.

However, the Women’s and Children’s Alliance claims restricted travel and a lack of services in Adelaide led to the babies’ deaths.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said, on advice given to him, his state’s health authorities did not prevent the critically ill children from being transported to Victoria.

That, he says, was in the hands of South Australian medicos.

The other interesting thing is this video is all over anti-vaxx media last 48 hours with them all having to make edits saying it actually happened 10 months ago as they originally tried to say was happening now.

For example

"Editor’s note: The reports about the four newborn babies occurred in October 2020. They did not occur in the summer of 2021, as our publication of the story suggested. We regret and apologize for the error. "

Interesting to note how information gets disseminated uncritically by consumers of social media.

In an effort to increase engagement (means more clicks and therefore more advertising money) media and social media platforms engaged Artificial intelligence and what they found to be most effective is using outrage to make people to come back. Since humans develop tolerances the AI needs to incrementally increase the outrage thus are people led up the garden path to radicalisation.

Review of Four Neonatal
Deaths at Adelaide Women’s
and Children’s Hospital

December 2020

5 Findings and Recommendations
5.2 There was no evidence that Covid-19 pandemic had a significant effect on the outcomes.
Usually, the Adelaide Women’s and Children’s Hospital received cardiothoracic advice and
support from the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne. The Royal Children’s Hospital option was
not available for these new born because of the Covid-19 pandemic, but the Children’s Hospital
at Westmead, Sydney was available and consulted about the management for all of the babies.

Well maybe those who dont want to be at risk can "adapr" and avoid contact with people and crowded places.

And again failure to understand.....

I am not advocating a complete dramatic change right now but maybe people could start by still trying to distance when they can, not hugging all and sundry when they don't need to, covering their mouths when they cough and many many more things like this. Over time more significant changes could be made to the way of life but most people wouldn't be prepared to do it because of the reasons I stated before.

JERUSALEM—

The massive surge of COVID-19 infections in Israel, one of the most vaccinated countries on earth, is pointing to a complicated path ahead for America.

In June, there were several days with zero new COVID infections in Israel. The country launched its national vaccination campaign in December last year and has one of the highest vaccination rates in the world, with 80 percent of citizens above the age of 12 fully inoculated. COVID, most Israelis thought, had been defeated. All restrictions were lifted and Israelis went back to crowded partying and praying in mask-free venues.

Fast forward two months later: Israel reported 9,831 new diagnosed cases on Tuesday, a hairbreadth away from the worst daily figure ever recorded in the country—10,000—at the peak of the third wave. More than 350 people have died of the disease in the first three weeks of August.

In a Sunday press conference, the directors of seven public hospitals announced that they could no longer admit any coronavirus patients. With 670 COVID-19 patients requiring critical care, their wards are overflowing and staff are at breaking point.

“I don’t want to frighten you,” coronavirus czar Dr. Salman Zarka told the Israeli parliament this week. “But this is the data. Unfortunately, the numbers don’t lie.”

Ach well, nothing to see here then folks, move along...

Incidentally the seven israeli hospitals are "striking" over money.

7 Israeli hospitals to switch to emergency mode due to financial crisis

Beginning Wednesday, Jerusalem’s Hadassah and other facilities will only accept patients in need of life-saving treatments.

Seven Israeli public hospitals will switch to “Shabbat mode” beginning Wednesday due to a persistent financial crisis.

At the same time, a person close to the crisis said that Health Ministry Director-General Prof. Nachman Ash had called the head of one of the hospitals and informed him that he is working on it and it will be resolved.

“I don’t think the government would allow Jerusalem to be deprived of nonurgent care for more than a day or two,” Halevy said Wednesday morning.

However, until the money owed to the hospitals is in the bank, they have said, they will not resume full operation. And so far, no money has been transferred.

Yeah 2 vaccines then possibly catching it rather than 3 vaccines while parts of the world are unvaccinated seems to be a discussion amongst the experts.

"Now, we're no longer starting with zero immunity as the overwhelming majority of people have either been vaccinated or have already caught the virus. "

Obviously the dumb position is still not to be vaccinated at all when given the choice.

Do they breakdown these numbers anywhere into vaccinated v unvaccinated, different age groups, etc? Be interesting to see who is catching it.

Nicola Sturgeon said in the briefing that around a third of those testing positive have been vaccinated

Nicola Sturgeon has obviously been listening to me. She said “living with Covid” is not the same as living without Covid, like the majority of people seem to think.

it is about time they started saying that life won’t be the same again at the very least for the foreseeable future and that people will have to keep thinking about what they do and take mitigating action. They have been notoriously poor at managing expectations and so many people seemed to have failed to understand that vaccines are not a silver bullet and are just one way of allowing us to live with Covid.

It’s a shame that the people who understand what living with Covid actually means and continue to adapt their way of life cannot get immunity from that.

So 80% of the population make up 30% of the infections and then 20% of the population make up the other 70% of the numbers.

That's a tenfold decrease in infection, which is line with the data avaialable and we know from other studies it's even better for hospitalisation and death.

It's all about mitigation that swiss cheese diagram has been about for a year and half or close to it now.

I'm just concentrating on what I can do, I still don't go indoors unless it's for food shopping. Not been to the gym since first week of March 2020 etc. Just all the simple stuff in that swiss cheese diagram thing.
