The initial UK government line was "just stay in your bed for a week and you'll be fine".  I don't know if that was ignorance or a deliberate lie but my money's on the latter.  As usual, follow the money...

At that time they probably didn't know any better. Nobody did. It is a totally new disease that medical folk have to learn how to treat.

Treatment of severely ill people in hospital has improved considerably in the space of 10 months of learning about this new disease. But the emphasis is still very much on just keeping people alive.

I don't think they have made much advances on treating the long term consequences of COVID, other that treat the conditions that it leaves behind, like heart conditions and lung damage etc.

As you say, there are still so many folk who just don't realise (or just refuse to accept) how serious a disease this is. Even for the people who survive it.

What chance have we got? The folk who are supposed to be enforcing the lockdown are blatantly breaking the rules. Too many folk are just not taking it seriously. Well over 100,000 deaths so far and getting higher every day.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-55800312

Australia has had a total of about 28,000 cases. The UK is still having more than that every single day.

Belgium. Anyone know what's going on?  During the first wave it was absolutely horrendous. This time so different. Is it just a case that the most vulnerable died last time so there's less deaths this time round? UK Govt seemed to have learnt nothing, Anyone know what the Belgians did differently?

The Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office has been tasked with attempting to return a $2 million stockpile of a malaria drug once touted by former President Donald Trump as a way to treat the coronavirus.

In April, Gov. Kevin Stitt, who ordered the hydroxychloroquine purchase, defended it by saying that while it may not be a useful treatment for the coronavirus, the drug had multiple other uses and “that money will not have gone to waste in any respect.”

But nearly a year later the state is trying to offload the drug back to its original supplier, California-based FFF Enterprises, Inc, a private pharmaceutical wholesaler.

Nae idea, but most of the Pfizer vaccine is currently being made in Belgium, so maybe the workers are managing to sneak some out in their pockets are selling it on the black market?

The photos on the front page of ruffled hair and ill fitting suit are to garner sympathy and is an old trick in media communication.

How the bloody hell he can issue a quarantine plan today after: the horse left the field; rampaged about the place for months; been put back in it's field but gate left ajar again; allowed to rampage worse than the first time not getting the day off at Xmas memo; then finally lock the gate but whilst its still causing carnage and still have a fucking job is outstanding testament to the power of our media outlets.

In a despot country he'd be hanging from a tree over this but instead he'll be welcomed up here with open arms in the midst of a pandemic to spout pish about 'SNP Bad' unabated.  Glen Campbell is probably finding it extraordinarily difficult not to masturbate himself into oblivion at the prospect.

If they've done their best, then their best isn't good enough.

Can you imagine if Corbyn had overseen 100'000 deaths?

They would have been calling for him to be imprisoned.

Indeed. Or imagine if all those charts showing UK almost at the top of infection or death rates, and with England at the actual top... imagine if it was Scotland outstripping England to be the actual worst in the world?

It would be headline news every day "Another blow for Sturgeon", the oppposition would be jumping up and down, Ian Murray and Willie Rennie calling for enquiries and tribunals, eevery paper calling for tthe FM to resign in same, Lords would be tweeting calling for a government of national unity in Holyrood, Johnson would be saying Scotland can't be trusted running the health service, let's run it by direct rule from London...

Just look at the deaths per million.  Many of these deaths could have been prevented if the UK Govt led by Johnson had adopted a different strategy. If thousands of people had died in a terrorist outrage and it was found that these  unnecessary deaths been caused by a PMs failure to act on security info then s/he would surely have had to resign in disgrace.  I'm not sure that I can see a lot of difference.

UK 1,515

Italy 1,446 (5% less, even though it got hit by Covid 3-4 weeks before the UK)

France 1,144 (20% less)

Germany 670 (more than 50% less)

Greece 552 (about 65% less)

Denmark 357 (about 75% less)

Norway 102 (about 90% less)

And only yesterday we've seen his successor suck up to the PM in justifying his trip to Scotland. Someone who has had the virus doing non-essential travel in an area that's devolved. Nothing more than an attempted PR stunt. Although it's probably added a few more % to Yes for independence.

Every cloud has a silver lining then...just hope no-one caught anything from him

Travelling tabby does a chart (see below) but it's important to read his notes about being careful when trying to compare stats from different countries. Even within the UK the countries count thing differently. Scotland alone has three different ways of counting.

https://www.travellingtabby.com/uk-coronavirus-tracker/

"These let people see how the UK is doing to some other countries around the world! Just bear in mind that making direct comparisons between countries like this has a lot of issues. Different countries, even inside the UK, will do things differently.

The number of cases will directly relate to how aggressive the country is on testing – a country that carries out more tests will have more cases. Some countries also record deaths differently.

There’s really no perfect way to compare countries, but the comparisons here at least give us a basic look at how things are.

Some notes on specific countries:

Ireland uses confirmed + suspected deaths in their total, whereas all the other countries use confirmed only deaths (as far as I am aware). This makes Ireland’s death count look worse than it really is.

The UK test total is made up of all antigen ‘processed’ tests (pillar 1 & 2). It doesn’t include ‘sent out’ tests, antibody tests (pillar 3), or surveillance tests (pillar 4). These are included in the total the UK gov puts out, which is why my number here is lower. You can see more about the types of tests here.

Also, different countries tend to go backwards and backdate new infections/deaths to different dates. It would be too much work for me to constantly do this, so historical data for other countries may not always match the official numbers. The current total will always be correct though! "

See some contention over AZ vaccine for over 65's. Well millions of over 65's must have had it here by now so we'll see in a few months whether it is justified or not.

What's the crack with it because saw it's efficacy figures were questioned and the sample size it was licensed on was ridiculously small but EU still trying to buy a shedload of it so no idea what's really going on.

It's just Germany so far who have said they want to see more data before they give it to over 65s.

It also worth remembering that although the EU are moaning like weans about shortage of supplies, they only actually approved it for use today.

Up until a couple of days ago, over 90% of the doses administered in Scotland were of the PfizerBNT variety. It's only now we are starting to use the AZ one in much larger numbers. More data will come from England before us, as they have been using a higher percentage of the AZ vaccine so far.

If I was over 65 (or any age really) I would be happy to get any of the vaccines currently approved.
