exile
Can anyone explain why the vaccine roll-out issue seems to be driven by or controlled by the UK Government? I get that the approval is somehow at UK level but why does it seem that Johnson is making lots of noises about rolling out as if he's the primer mover for it, while at the same time the Tories and media seem to be agitating for the Scottish government to get their skates on? Surely either it's devolved, in which case it's nothign to do with Johnson, or else it isn't, in which it's a UK Got gthing i which case why aren't the Tories moaning at themsleves to get their skates on? Either Johnson is overstepping the mark and/or getting carried away with a chance to be a positive actor in the great British vaccine success story while leaving others to clear up the mess of the whole COVID too little too late tragedy of last year? Or, with the vaccine under his own control, he thinks he can get ahead of the 'devolved nations' in a race he could win starting from a clean sheet? Or am I just being too cynical? Ā politicising events is what politicians do, they can't help themselves, some are a lot worse than others at it. They just think differently. Mind when 9/11 happened someone was saying how it was a good time to get bad news out. They then went on to be a primary school teacher. As an aside i agree with your reasoning as laid out. Alibi
Is the Astrazeneca vaccine not manufactured in Belgium? Pfizer one is being made in Belgium at the moment. I think think the initial supplies of the AstraZeneca one have been made in Netherlands and Germany so far. The plan is to make the AstraZeneca one in various places all over the world including the UK (well England, I suppose). They had some problems at the UK site initially and I don't know if they are manufacturing there yet. It doesn't matter where it's made as long as it has a union jack sticker on it.Ā Ā
phart
Science is a truly global effort now as well. Dave78
Why are youse all assuming the person quoted by the doctor wants 'the English one' simply because it's English? Could it not be they had legitimate concerns about the new technology of the Pfizer vaccine, preferring the traditional style vaccine, and had forgotten the (bit of a mouthful) AstraZeneca name? If he'd said "i want to wait for the Oxford one", this wouldn't be a story.

I'd also like to see more than a shaky minute of video. Someones obviously called the police for a reason. The children are pleading with their mum, the police have obviously changed tactics recently with enforcing things. A whole lot more information needed to see what this is about. It's outrage media though, we're biochemically predisposed as a species to react strongly to it and so it gets used as the medium to give information to us as it grabs our attention. It's also the worst way to objectively appraise information though and make rational decision on that information. Like making all your decisions based on gossip I was beginning to think I was looking at a video no one else was when reading the comments - very few people have questioned what they feel they have seen. I have seen people claiming the police laid into them and that there was a child having a fit on the floor. I have also seen the claim the police forced themselves into the house when the video doesn't show how they entered.Ā The woman is rude and aggressive and then the guy moves towards the policemen who puts his arm up to push him away then all you see is shaky footage where there is obviously some sort of scuffle but there isĀ no way of tell who is doing what. Then all you see is a wall and hear the women screaming. It is impossible to come to any conclusions based on that video. In my job I am haveĀ often been aware of situations where someone claims something that is a pile of nonsense that its printed in the mediaĀ but we cannot tell people the truth because of confidentiality etc. I have therefore developed a cynicism when things like this appear. The police had body cameras and it would be interesting to see what they show.

But the media has madeĀ clear (rightly or wrongly) that the AstraZeneca vaccine is based on traditionalĀ tech, hence why it doesn't need special storage It doesn't need special storage cause of the adenovirus protein structure compared to RNA protein structure neither of which are dependent on "tradiotional technology" . Although their properties would be a part of the selection for use. The technology isn't that different. Oxford uses adenoviruses to contain DNA to enter cells travel to the nucleus and provide the information to RNA which then creates certain proteins which the body then has an immune response to, and since the proteins are similiar to Covid we develop an effective defense. Pfizier uses RNA surrounded by nano-particle lipids (hence the need for specialised storage) and interact with cells sending the RNA message directly to the cell which then produces the same "spike proteins" and the cell destroys the original stuff. The body then fights these spike proteins and we develop an immune response. Both technologies were approved within 6 months of each other. The brand new Ebola vaccine was approved in July 2020 which the Oxford is based on and the pfizier one was approved just recently. Although adenovirus based vaccines have been getting studied for much longer than just a year or so. It's not been studied with as much research money, minds and rigour as the new covid specific vaccines. The media is part of the "British is best" circus as well.
