Just back from a weekend in Aberdeen, enjoyed a pint in the freezing cold outside brewdog, lovely. Social distancing has gone to fuck, nobody caring at all anymore

Thats what i am hearing from friends and family in the north east. Hardly anyone is following the rules so i guess they wont be moaning when the rules get tighter again 🙄🙄

We were so close to controlling it then let it get out of hand and couldn't rein it in as the correct infrastructure hadn't been put in place.

Aye, that map just shows how close we were to eliminating it in Scotland. If only we could have put the right measures in place at that time, we could now be in a similar position to New Zealand.

We stuck to it  pretty well through the first lockdown and wee lass didn’t see her granny/grandad in person for months.

When it opened up I had two mates from Stoke who booked to come up because neither wanted to go abroad or to the south coast because it was full of thick folk spreading Covid.  I was going point out we weren’t particularly keen on having thick folk spreading it up here either but the hotel my wife works in was fully booked with folk travelling from throughout the UK, including Aberdeen when that was in lockdown, so seemed pointless.

Imagine if we had the power to shut the border and to stop folk flying in – we’d have been in a position track n trace might have actually achieved something.  Instead we’re back at square one staring full lockdown again square in the face worrying I'll need order Christmas Dinner off Just Eat.

Aye I think its the same all over tbh, stopped at the service station at Perth and the toilets were just functioning as normal, no urinals or sinks etc closed off, no maximum people or anything. Supermarkets are just back to how they used to be.

I think this takes us back to the mask discussion. The evidence is leaning more and more towards showing that mask wearing is overall beneficial. But, one of the arguments, which has always been there, against masks is that they can lead to a feeling of ever confidence. People think that wearing a mask makes them invincible and they stop doing all the other things which are actually more important. Like distancing. Two meters is still the guideline (more if you can manage it), but I have lost count of the number of folk I have met who think it's now one meter. And, one meter in their heads is actually more like a foot in reality. Loads of folk just don't care and have given up. I don't know how many more deaths it's going to take to make folk take it seriously again.

The good thing is it isn't rocketing up atm cause some measures are in place and enough people following them to stop the unmitigated spread that happened at the start of the year. The bad thing is we're still only 2 doubling periods from where we were. So if it takes 28/25 days to get there instead of 7, we still get there.

Also check this mentalness out, we might have folk ignoring the public health messages but least no credible threats to actually shoot the messenger of said messages.

If you think Nicola Sturgeon is getting it tight regarding pubs being closed right now, have a shufty at the comments page on BBC Wales at the bile aimed at Drakeford, a Unionist politician. The fallout if Sturgeon went down that road would rival Hiroshima amongst the Unionists

It's crazy how angry people get at pubs being shut/ lockdowns, when you think about all the other stuff there is to be angry about. I guess as a species we just don't care unless it affects us directly.

Especially when you think over 60% of the electorate voted wither Tory or didn't vote at all (UK). it's about 50% of the electorate in Scotland.

I noticed the comments yesterday, a few of them were also dropping Sturgeon’s name in simply to get a dig. As you say , if she went down that route they would explode.

I was at Morrisons the other day. Person in front of me must have made a comment about the price of something and I heard the check out woman say ‘ you can thank Nicola Sturgeon for that with her minimum price alcohol’.
I wasnt paying much attention as I was unpacking my shopping.

When she was putting through my shopping she said ‘ thats a big pasta bowl’ .
I made a comment about having to cook more as the pubs and restaurants were closed. She then said ‘ Nicola Sturgeon has gone too far she is wrecking the economy with this lockdown’.
I said to her I didnt think she had much option in order to slow down the spread of the virus. I was pretty relaxed in my reply.
She then started getting ratty , sayIng she had other options, that restaurants should be opened . She asked me where I lived then went off on a tangent about the restaurants in my area and how they were suffering.
I said to her  it was difficult to define a restaurant from a pub and that was the problem. She was getting angrier , saying NS was only doing this to deflect from ‘ the carry on with her husband’ and to get one up on Boris Johnson.  I said I didnt think NS needed to worry about Johnson given the current ratings.
By then she was battering through my shopping 😂
I was amazed at how calm I was because she was absolutely raging.
At the end I said to her it may not be a good idea to bring up politics at the check out as not everyone is going to agree with her.

The guy behind me was smiling at me and rolling his eyes, but she had better be careful or someone will report her.

Hello,

I wanted to get in touch today to apologise for the email that some of you received on Saturday from us about face coverings.

We have listened to the valuable feedback that we’ve received from you, our contributors, and now understand that this wasn’t the right thing to do. We thought selling donated masks for charity would be a good opportunity to raise money for long COVID research. However, we did not consider the implications of working with a commercial company.

I want to personally apologise for this, and assure you that all of us here at the COVID Symptom Study will learn from this experience. Without you, our loyal contributors, none of our scientific discoveries or hotspot detection would be possible. We are incredibly grateful for your commitment.

We also want to reassure you that we haven’t shared your personal details with any commercial companies, and we never will. This email was, as always, sent by ZOE, the healthcare company behind the app.

Thank you for taking the time to read this email and for your understanding.

Professor Tim Spector

On behalf of the COVID Symptom Study

I can see why people are getting the hump. Pubs and restaurants are still a big hub for socialization. It is not just about booze as folk can still drink at home it is about spending time in a social environment. This is especially true if you are confined to working from home. Plus a lot of people live alone to begin with. So getting out for a few hours to watch the football with a few mates or hit the curry house or whatever, just being around other human beings is important.

It is becoming really grinding to people now second time around is my impression. I think a lot of people are internally reevaluating the risks versus the sacrifices being asked of them and are tilting now in favour of taking on more risk and keeping things more open.

The numbers just aren't climbing at the same rate as previously, enough folks behaviours have been changed to curb the wild doubling rate, still climbing up though and will continue to do so.

The problem is what happens when infection control fails and it gets into a cancer ward (happened in Edinburgh) or Care Home (Happened East Whitburn) as happened last week or so, it just wipes folk out. Folk talk about cancer patients missing treatment and that is obviously shit, but if they catch this after a serious operation or during treatment the IFR is sky high for them.

There doesn't seem to be a good solution.

There's 824 folk in hospital and 69 ICU, peak was 1520 and 170.

Loads of ICU doctors on twitter or rather folk who proclaim to be, with social media who know? The ones I checked seemed legit (what do i know though) have been derisive of the "nightingale" hospitals as they had no excess staff to actually work in them. Basically saying without the specialists required to work them just glorified medical beds.

Mate of mine’s mother died last week from cancer.  She was originally diagnosed a year or so ago - actually she had cancer some years back but had been in remission.

She went for a check up a couple of months back and was told it had spread and was terminal so basically she had two months left.

Doctors are blaming COVID for meaning that several of her checkups when they should’ve been monitoring it were cancelled so they didn’t pick up on the spread.

However, reading between the lines it would’ve required a pretty risky operation, not that it would’ve threatened her life but would’ve had a high chance of some pretty unpleasant implications.  Reading between the lines I suspect they held off doing the op until they absolutely had to.  Had the operated last summer, chances are that she’d still be alive.

I don’t think you can blame the doctors for not being able to foresee COVID but the reasons she died isn’t entirely down to COVID.

His sister’s a lawyer so I don’t think this is the end of it though.

Some truly depressing statistics today. In amongst it all, one figure stands out to me - new infections:

https://data.gov.scot/coronavirus-covid-19/detail.html#new_infections

With a mean estimate of 12,050 new infections per day against actual positive tests of 1,429 on 14th of October (both figures will have risen since then), how effective can contact tracing be when 7/8 of cases go undetected?

That's the mean between the minimum and maxiums of the various models is it not? (18900+5200)/2 ?

Lets hope the actual value is on the lower end. To answer your question, fuck knows. WHO guidance does state if you're getting a greater than 5% positivity rate you're not testing enough and we've been 3 times that of late.

I see estimated R has been about 1.3 minimum for 3 weeks now which is also not great.

At least it's not rocketing up like before but doubling is still doubling and eventually it will take off if not mitigated.

i see todays figures are:

1739 new cases 19.8% positivity and 9.7% of total tests. (must be introducing new measuring conventions.)

872 peeps in hospital now. 73 in ICU.

28 deaths... fuck. Highest number of deaths since May.

Are you sure she didn't just ask if you wanted a hand with packing your shopping and the bloke was rolling his eyes thinking 'deaf al bat off on one'?  :)
