Seen it discussed here and there so thought I’d get a proper thread/poll going to see the discussion, who should be our captain going forward? Many people have questioned Andy Robertson’s leadership abilities and even said he hasn’t been the same player since he was giving captaincy thus he should no longer be captain, others have suggested players such as McTominay or McGinn have the leadership qualities to lead us or even Tierney when he’s back match fit.. so what Captain would you have going forward?

I'll give my stance on it, I voted for Scott McTominay. I feel he’s the type of person who has the leadership qualities we have been crying out for. Someone who’s influence can affect the players positively on the pitch and can help them go all the way. We see his leadership qualities for Man Utd, always giving out Instructions and giving the players orders letting them know there role. That’s exactly what Scotland need. A leader and a good influence on and off the pitch.

He’ll be the heart in our midfield for years to come and we’re very much lucky to have him, with the same England fans who criticised him now wishing he picked them over us, thankfully he didn’t because unlike many he’s loyal to the country he’s always supported regardless of the mess we’re in. Players like him will help us get out of it.

also, There’s absolutely no disrespect to Andy Robertson as a player, he’s a great guy and a world class left back who we are lucky to have, but he’s just never a leader in a million years. He needs the weight lifted from his shoulders since he’s already got enough as it is trying to salvage our rotten defence. I hope Clarke’s does what’s best for the team and gives the armband to McTominay and let Robbo know it’s nothing personal but a footballing decision on who’s the better leader.

I agree 100% with your McTominay sentiments. The rate in which he's improving has been frightening. The more matches he's playing, the more he's improving and more confident he's becoming.

I watched him closely in pre-season and saw him boss the midfield of AC Milan, Inter Milan and Tottenham so I saw what was coming. There's far more to come from him, though. It's just the tip of the iceberg. In pre-season he was bullying experienced internationals, players who have played at World Cups, etc. As well as spraying the ball around like a prime Scholes.

As a person he seems humble and a level-headed lad who isn't all about emojis, stupid hairstyles and going out to clubs and casinos on a school night. He's only going to get better.

He chose us over England. When you stop to think about that you have to admire the courage of his convictions. He could walk into the England first XI. He is clearly proud of being Scottish.

In my opinion he's a future Manchester United captain.

As for now, though, just let him develop without adding the extra burden of Scotland captaincy onto his shoulders. I'd stick with Robertson.

I'd pair Robertson up with McTominay in midfield, as Robertson simply cannot stamp his quality out wide in a Scotland shirt.

Make no mistake, Andy Robertson has been nothing short of a revelation. An absolute inspiration to all present and future Scotland players and fans. His attitude is outstanding. His ability unmatched. However, maybe he's not loving captaincy? Maybe he's in a tough position for a captain? For me there is really only one clear alternative and that's McTominay. He just has it. It's plain to see.

Robertson has been very poor with Scotland in the recent games. Not sure if that's because he's captain or if he's struggling with the different tactics and quality of players.

Stick with Robbo, no need to p*ss off a top class left back by taking the captaincy from him.

Today sums up why McTominay shouldn't be captain (yet).

He followed up his best performance of the season, against Chelsea, with his worst, against Bournemouth.

He's still raw and still learning and very inconsistent. Robertson is a European Cup winner and he never delivers less than 7/10 on a weekly basis.

Playground stuff, let's make the best player captain.

Agreed, that's why Robertson is, and should remain, the captain.

This is McTominay's first season as a Manchester United regular, the last thing he needs is captaincy, either at domestic or international level.

Hahaha I like this new tactic. Just say "agreed" in response to someone who has completely disagreed with you 😂

Nah. He said that the best player (Robertson) should be captain. He's talking sense. ;)

I don’t really get why this is an issue that keeps coming up, granted Robertson was poor against Belgium and Russia but so was everyone else, we’re way behind both these teams, changing captains will do bugger all and might do more harm than good.

McTominay? 😂😂😂

McTominay and McGinn are our best central midfielders, by a clear distance. (Gilmour being the closest midfielder to them) So I'm not really sure why you're laughing.

You think he’s captain material at this stage?

I’m laughing at the idea of him being captain, I rate him as a player.

He is in the mix, but i'd give it another three years or so.

The people who voted him have probably never watched him in a full match. The lad is learning as he goes, giving him the captain's armband now is crazy. He would probably take it in his stride, though, as he seems a level headed lad.

Watched him plenty of times for utd. I have full belief he’d make a great captain. He’s frequently in on giving players instructions and letting them know there role despite not being Utd captain.

but in the other hand, do we really want to piss off the worlds best left back?

I voted McTominay as like I said he’s a real leader even at 21, but taking the captaincy off someone is always going to be a struggle.

Nah. I was inferring you, mate. Lots of others here act like they've never watched a football match in their entire lives.

Ideally, I'd keep the captain's armband with Robertson and move him in the middle, where he can influence the game more. I wouldn't be against giving the armband to McTominay, as nothing fazes him. I think he's future captain material, both for Scotland and Manchester United.

All four of the players you listed are captain material.

He'll be 23 on the 8th December. ;)

You might have a point there. I don't think the other "worlds best left back" has played for us since he was "overlooked" for the captaincy when Robertson got it instead.

Fair enough mate, biggest worry as it’s been mentioned. We remove the captaincy of Robertson and he loses motivation to play which leads to a fall out.

I've always worried it could be the same factor that’s seen KT pull out of games giving be easy giving captaincy under mckay against the Dutch. Double hernia or not. It’s never a nice thing to do.
