Well I wasn't even the first to arrive at The Meadows and they were still pouring in there an hour and a half after I arrived and bear in mind it was peeing it down with rain.

Hard to gauge how many thousands were there but it is always a laugh passing a handful of yoons armed with a microphone and their faded Union Jack suits.

What time did you get to the Meadows?  I never made it that far. Had to get the 15.42 to Kings Cross. Came up on the coach overnight so didn't have a lot of sleep but great turn out in the rain.

I got to The Meadows at around 2.15 pm and was there for about an hour and a half and people were still arriving there when I left around 4ish. Great bonhomie and atmosphere - a feeling of real togetherness.

It was after half 3 by the time we got to the meadows and there was still loads of people behind us.

I didn't go, but fair dues to all that did, but some of the snobbery/the cringe basically from the houlier than thou independence supporters about these things really gets on my goat.

Well done to everyone who went and hope you enjoyed yourself!

Anyone see George Kerevan's Twitter? Haha, he must have been liquored up, hacked or someone with his phone. As he kept repeating "Shame Nicola didn't turn up to this," to Tweets and pics of the demo.

How do you mean ?

I know quite a few people are wondering what is the point of involving the Scottish Socialist Party any longer.

The fact is that they are no more than an insignificant discussion group with a small and ever dwindling membership and some of their few remaining members are actively campaigning for Labour in Scotland.

They don't have have any MSP's nor even a single councillor. The Green Party has now firmly occupied the radical left wing berth in Scottish politics with quite a few of their councillors and senior members being ex SSP.

As always with these events both sides seem to exaggerate how many or how little were there. 250k seems very optimistic looking at the pictures but 11k seems completely ridiculous as well. Does anyone have an actual accurate number regarding attendance figures.

My estimate would be around the 60K mark using some logic. I arrived at The Meadows at 2.15pm and people carried on flowing in for almost two hours thereafter. Given that grass was muddy they were sticking to the path but it was a solid block of people so would say if you stood at one spot you were being  passed by a crowd about 10 wide across the path. That would equate to about 400 per minute and 24,000 per hour over two hours makes 48,000 and there were already many thousands at the Meadows by the time we got there.

Also I know of many supporters who lined the route by the roadside unable to partake in the walk for age or health reasons who were supporting the cause. Given the crappy weather that alone displays the appetite there is for IndyRef 2 even though Westminster will try to deny it.

Cheers for that info, sounds like a more accurate number count. I don't understand ppl over estimating the numbers, 60k plus is a decent turnout given the weather and the fact there has been other indy marches in towns and cities recently.

Cheers.

Well over-estimating I think happens to counter-balance the under-estimating done by union supporters.

No, nothing against any parties including SSP - a shame what happened to them - I think I even gave them a list vote in 2003.

It's more the bourgeois middle class mostly SNP types who were sniping on Twitter about these marches and not going , one even Southsidegirl (no idea who she is) said I hope it pishes down on them probably more to do with some of the company on it  e.g Siol nan Gaidheal, Sheridan, the anti-trans people in their eyes etc.

As long as they tick Yes in the next independence vote I could not give a stuff about what they say about these marches.

There's always been a unionist element within the SSP. When they had their few years of success after devolution was established some party members tried to have the commitment to independence scrapped at a party conference in favour of what we would now call "devo max" but were defeated.

They waste most of their time today concerned about Palestine, Cuba and Venezuela rather than Scotland.

Carolyn Leckie is the only person from that party that I ever thought highly of, she is a good speaker and deeply committed to independence. She would be better off joining the Greens and returning to Holyrood with them.

On the SNP. I know for a fact that some (although not all) of the "old guard" (particularly in North Lanarkshire) within the party are very jealous and bitter of the rapid rise many new members have had to senior positions within the party since 2014.

Always found the SnG lads and lassies to be brand new whenever I've come across them. It's a very, very different organisation now to the original SNG of the late 70s/early 80s.

Some of the crowd estimates I've seen from both sides on this are bonkers.

No chance there was 100,000 there nevermind 200.000!

Looks around 50-60k.

Defo more than 11k or whatever the other side are saying though!

True but the 11K BS was being reported nationwide by the media and seen as written in stone whereas the 200K BS would have only been reported to a smaller audience.
