Its good to see but hes about to turn 22 and has barely played any games for feynoord, surely a loan somewhere might be best if he doesn't look like playing much. He could be an excellent defender but he's never going to get experience sitting on feynoords bench.

Feynoord are probably on a par with Celtic or Rangers maybe even lower than that. It's hard for central defenders to break into a team but if he is good enough it's not that high a standard.

Any one know the standard of opposition in these friendlies?

Hadn't realised Dick Advocaat was Feynoord's manager these days - not someone exactly renowned for bringing through young Scottish talent when he was Rangers manager (although he brought through one more young Scottish player than the present incumbent has to date!).

But aye, Johnston is at an age now where he needs to start playing games. If it's in Feynoord's senior team, all the better, but failing that, on loan somewhere.

He certainly helped Barry Ferguson. He also signed Neil McCann, Allan Johnston and Colin Hendry.

Aye, Barry Ferguson was the young Scottish player I was referring to.  McCann cut his teeth at Dundee then Hearts and Johnston was an established international before he signed for Rangers (where he became little more than a squad player).

Advocaat never signed Hendry. He didn't even want him at Rangers.

Hendry was one of a number of signings from down the years that Murray made over his managers heads because he thought he had an eye for a player.

There are a few chairmen who do that kind fo thing.

why should he? As a club manager he had zero responsibility for bringing through Scottish players.

Latest Scottish/Spanish striker.

20 year old Ewan Urain training in Athletic Bilbao’s first team.

His record for their youth team should be enough for an under 21 call up.

I'm following Byron too, very interesting. Urain had 3 goals in 5 games last season in Segunda B - 6 foot 3, and a centre forward! Surely not...

Yeah, big 20 year old centre forwards from a technical league are always welcome. Straight to the u21s.

Athletic Club website seems to say he scored 11 in 26 for the u18s, 13 in 29 for the u19s and then got his 3 goals last season in Segunda B before being switched into the u23 squad mid season. No stats on games played - probably disrupted due to the shutdown. Very promising progression to be training with the first team ahead of the new season.

So even when he was managing a Scottish club you don't think it's notable that only one homegrown player became a regular under him?

There might have been underlying reasons for that that weren't down to him, e.g. there weren't enough youngsters at the club who were up to it, I'll give him that.

He had a bad knee injury in Dec 19. Only just fit again.

Byron’s an absolute fantastic analyst for scottish players or players with Scottish roots in Europe, thanks to him I came across bobby allain and passed the news through here.

Ewan Urain Roy Aird (some name eh) sounds promising, another player to keep tabs on for the future.

lad from Bilbao seems highly This lad from Bilbao does seem highly promising. I tried searching to find his eligibility last night to no avail so Byron does seem to be well connected.. Let's hope the sfa are doing their job just as well.
