Scottish players in action 19/20

Look at how lambert and Collins came on when they moved to decent European teams.

Collins was an excellent player before he left Scotland, lambert was a strange one, he was plucked from relative obscurity at motherwell to European Cup success with dortmund. Quite unbelievable really to go from motherwell at the age of 26/27 to that level in one season. Must be one of the biggest jumps any player has ever made in Europe and is really a freak occurrence.

I don't see the problem with old firm players sticking with the Scottish league. They might improve slightly in the epl but tbh guys like forrest and mcgregor are not going to play for top 6 epl clubs and they get good experience of the pressure of having to win every game and trophy plus they play in Europe against quality opposition. Celtic have proven that they can compete against top opposition with their wins over lazio where the Scottish players played very well.  If they are genuinely good enough for a top epl club then they will get a move like Tierney has.

I agree that players outside of the old firm are mostly not good enough for international football barring the odd one or two. We should just select our squads from mostly the epl and the old firm imo and only select a handful from the spl and English championship.

Goal for Tierney. He's building up a great relationship with aubemyang.

credited with an assist on who scored, for Aubemyang I assume as he has scored the other two goals

Assist for McGinn. He's not looked great though. Missed a clear chance and gave away a terrible free kick outside the area which West Ham should have done better with.

Hes looked quite poor since the restart. Hopefully form picks up next season before the play off games.

McTominay on then gets crocked. Red card indeed..

As it stands we are looking at another season with number of Scots in the EPL increasing. The EPL isn't all it's cracked up to be, I know, but that's positive.

And why does that wank Souness keep referring to it as a lucky goal!? Yes it had the slightest of deflections but come on, every goal Frank Lampard scored took a 90° deflection on the way in and he was God. It was a pass back he said at half time, Jesus, do you have to welly it before it counts. Twat!

Souness is a legend.  I will have nothing bad said about him! 😊

I think you may be confusing the word leg with bell 😁

Well done on missing the point. The point was both could easily make it in that league

Thanks. I thought the point was the EPL isn't what it's made out to be unless you're talking about the top 2-5 sides.

Anyway, we're in violent agreement. They both certainly could make it in the EPL without a doubt.

All in all I think this season was an excellent one for the Scottish players in action particularly in England.

Cooper and Douglas finally got promotion so they'll be two more to add to the premier league pool next season.

Had to be patient with Tierney but last 10 games showed he's going to be a key player for Arsenal for many years to come.

Robbo was Robbo

Fleck and McBurnie played their parts in a top 10 finish for Sheffield United

Stuart Armstrong ended the season as a key player for Southampton. I can see them finishing top 8 next season if they keep Ings.

McGinn started the season brilliantly for club and country. Then got injured and wasn't himself when he returned but another chance for premier league football next year at least.

McTominay was one of Man. United's best players in the first half of the season but then slipped down the pecking order a bit. Still Darren Fletcher being a squad player there for 4-5 years didn't do his career any harm.

Shame what happened to Wigan as they ended the season barely conceding a goal. Have to think another championship club will pick up David Marshall who remains the best option in goal for the national team.

Only one who slipped was Ryan Fraser, downing tools when Bournemouth needed him. I see the links to some top 6/7 clubs have dried up so no idea where he'll end up next year, needs a big season wherever it is.

Overall I think the situation is looking more positive than a long time. The proof in pudding will be September-November of course.

Bain would make a decent enough goalie for a mid-table SPFL team but he isn't international standard.

Given the current paucity of Scottish goalkeeping talent I wouldn't completely discount him ever appearing in a Scotland squad again though! I see David Marshall was relegated to League One with Wigan the other night.

Wigan kept loads of clean sheets in the run in so he'll easily get a move to another championship team.

It's top level of football Scots currently play at. Where is the lack of logic in being interested in Scots playing there?

Yeah I don't understand it either. It's like saying when Belgium had that great crop coming through a decade ago likes of Hazard/De Bruyne/Lukaku/Mertens/ Kompany/Vertongthen etc should've all stayed at Anderlecht or Club Brugge rather than testing themselves in England or other major leagues.

The more Scottish players in premier league the better. They are testing themselves v Aguero, Salah, Mane, Kane, Silva, De Bruyne, Bruno Fernandes, Pulisic, Van Dijk etc. Last time I looked there are no world class players in the SPL (compared to 90s when you had Gazza, Brian Laudrup, Larsson, Albertz, Van Bronckhorst, De Boer) so it makes sense to go and play higher standard of oppostion so it's not as much of a shock when you play them at international level.

Problem with Scotland is the negative mentality when (some) of them turn up for duty with the widespread belief Scotland seemingly won't ever qualify for a major tournament again. It's something Clarke really has to crack and get them all excited to meet up.

It's a bit like Wales in 90s and early 00s. Had Rush, Hughes, Giggs, Speed, Saunders, Ratcliffe, Southall etc but never qualified for anything. Now all the Welsh team rush back from their clubs to meet up for internationals and you had Bale prefering to play for them than Real Madrid which is an incredible turnaround from a decade ago. Imagine Robbo and Tierney sitting out games for their clubs to make sure they're fully fit for the next big Scotland game, it's the opposite currently.

There is the other side of the coin to this though. Suxch is the competition for places at plenty of EPL clubs then chances are extremely limited. In effect a player getting regular first team football in the SPL is better to us (Scotland) than moving to the EPL and warming the bench at best and going without competitive matches.

Scottish teams need to improve aswell though. In the 90s it made more sense for scottish players to stay in SPL longer as the general standard of player was far higher, not just at the old firm but Hibs had a decent team with likes of Sauzee and Russell Latapy so I imagine they were good influences for someone like Kenny Miller coming through at that time. Teams were also far more competitive in europe, remember Rangers knocking out a Parma side that had likes of Buffon and Thuram in it.

In 2000s you had Celtic and Rangers both making a europa league final and getting to last 16 of CL a few times, even Aberdeen got to knock outs of europa in 07/08. Now no-one outside the top 2 has any sort of european run and Celtic find it a major struggle just to make group stages of champions league and got knocked out of europa before Rangers did which is some going.

The Old Firm have generally been pretty good in Europe, but in the last 10 years or so the rest of the Scottish teams have been beyond abysmal, with the occasional blip of a favourable result. Certainly a reason to be interested in players in the EPL.

this is because in relative terms the Scottish league has become shit in that time and that comes down to the SFA and a SPFL.  How many think tanks have we seen.  Nothing changes.  The game run by muppets for muppets.

Jay Fultan had a decent match for Swansea last night. set up the winner and neat and tidy throughout. I know e are strong in that area but if Swansea came up ( and they have the momentum ) then another midfielder playing EPL.

Their manager has a good reputation for developing young players and definitely has improved Jay this season.

Its Paterson V Cairney tonight.

Its mostly down to TV money. Top European leagues get huge TV money and sponsorship deals that Scottish teams can only dream of. Not sure if there is much that the spfl or sfa can do Tbf.

that is entirely true, and if you look at how the decline of Scottish football accelerated after 1992 when Sky arrived that is clear.  What was required was proper leadership in the game to develop talent and restructure our leagues to address this....  been a poor show.
