When Shearer asks who will decide the Manchester derby, DeBruyne or McTominay, surely it's time to accept he should be first on our team sheet too?

I'm a fan of McTominay but giving credence to anything the braindead Alan Shearer says is not exactly going to strengthen any argument. and that is also kindly overlooking his brief journey into management.

He should be one of our first and he along with McGinn are by far our best midfielders.

He is a trillion miles away from being anything like De Bruyne is though, albeit they are different types of players completely.

They absolutely are. Very different and it's not saying McTominay is the class of DeBruyne but that McTominay is very highly regarded.

McTominay, McGinn, Robertson, Tierney and Christie. 5 genuinely high quality players. Fraser, Forrest and McGregor on their day as well. All feels so close and yet.....

We have some of the best players we have had in 20-30 years in certain positions at the moment.

Unfortunately we also have some of the worst players we have had in 20-30 years in certain positions at the same time.

That being said I’m starting to believe we may somehow qualify now...

Wont be long before people start saying we have a golden generation ...

We’ve not beaten a team of any quality in at least 2 years and the gap between us and Russia was staggering at times.

Only Robertson has consistently played at a level that could be considered high quality, McGinn and the rest are one bad game away from being not good enough again.

Point being, steady on

Serbia have a guy who’s scored more at 25 than our entire squad.

I totally agree. Am certainly not getting carried away. We just have some quality players in a few positions. Proudscot is absolutely right to say that's balanced out by being pretty poor elsewhere.

You are right to be cautious as we are completely unproven against any side of a decent calibre.

We do though have a number of players playing at a good level who could actually get better which is quite encouraging.

Think back to the days of Craig levein or Burley, we would have loved to have the level of potential that we currently have.

Cautious optimism.....

Agree with cautious optimism. We could, though, have the best midfield in the world but still struggle with the defenders and forwards we have right now. Can only hope that Griffiths returns to health and form, and that Shankland continues to develop and score goals as he comes up against better teams. Defensively our only hope is that some of our young players improve rapidly but teenage centre halves would be a worry. McKenna seems to have gone off the boil too.

We certainly don't have any top class centre halves, that's why it's so important we get the right shape and formation to protect the defence whilst still being a threat going forward.

Clarke is renowned for sitting deep so hopefully being nice and compact will protect our centre halves. I think Gallagher and McKenna are our best, yet to see anything from Cooper other than he captains Leeds therefore must be good.

Centre forward, less worried about as we should have goals from the middle so we probably need our centre forward to link play and press from the front.

To be fair to Cooper, hes had a few injuries this season and to be captain of Leeds while riding high in the table is not something we should dismiss especially when he plays in one of our problem areas. As for our forward player problems, Griffiths when fit and on form is absolutely frightening, other than that we are a bit light. I would call up Smith from Millwall as hes a  better option than trying to shoehorn someone else in that position

RE Cooper you're probably right just not been impressed by him any time I've seen him.

Matt Smith? Wouldn't dismiss him out of hand as I'd think he be a big threat from set pieces but don't think he'll really be on the radar.

Spot on but ......

They key part of football is scoring goals and defending. That is a massive achilles heel to us. Our central defence is at its weakest that I can remember and that stretches back 40+ years. And upfront, likewise, we are toothless. We do not have a striker capable of scoring goals regularly for us and more often than not rely on our midfield for goals. Before we get anywhere in international football the defence has to become meaner and leak less silly goals and we must find a striker with an eye for goal or else we will get nowhere. Sad thing is I do not see any real change on the horizon unless Gallagher can prove himself in the centre of defence alongside another such as McKenna. On the striker front it may not be too daft a call pushing McGinn up there.

I'd say CM is starting to shape into that, I'd say we have the best CM out of the home nations (minus England)

Positions plural.

As for centre midfield, not one of our current players come close to Darren Fletcher, Paul Lambert or Barry Ferguson.

Oh and Aaron Ramsay is better than anyone we've got.

You don't think scoff mctominay comes close to those 3? Seriously? Ferguson in particular seems to have become a better player since he retired as he was persona non grata for a lot of Scotland fans for years.

McTominay is top notch and will get better and better in years to come.

Hard to disagree with any of that. 👍
