ErsatzThistle
You might like the works of L.T.C Rolt. He was an English transport and engineering historian who wrote about a variety of subjects such as Victorian civil engineering, Brunel, the Stephensons, railway disasters, the successful campaign to save the Talyllyn Railway, restoring and promoting the neglected canal networks. He also wrote three wonderful volumes of autobiography about his adventurous life as an engineer, transport enthusiast and preservationist. Great guy and his writing style is very engaging. Some of his books are in print, others aren't but you can find them in places like eBay, second hand or charity shops.
