It's time for a mutiny

It's heartening to read that there's a building sense of discontent with the Tartan Army against the SFA. Even the Daily Record are taking digs at the SFA and urging change at the top. The more this happens, and if it spreads to other newspapers and media, the SFA won't like it one little bit. Their modus operendi is taking our money and flying under the radar

What would be more beneficial, a protest or a boycott? Or both, as I doubt very much that Scotland would ever play in front of a completely empty Hampden. Apparently the Irish FA are going to be hit by a fine because their fans throwing tennis balls on the court.as a protest against members of their football association.

I think it's about time we did something similar. The SFA love money so I doubt that they'd enjoy being hit with a fine, no matter how much it is. A boycott would also hit them in the pocket. Banners, songs, etc, it all adds us. The SFA can't ignore us forever if we make out voices heard.

We're now in a situation where none of us are confident that the Scotland national team could hold their own against a decent team, never mind a good one. We have one or two players who we trust. Our domestic clubs are not producing youngsters. Our domestic clubs are constantly being beaten at the very start of European competitions. Our domestic players aren't competing against top players on a regular basis. People may lay claim that the responsibility for the fortunes of domestic football lays with the clubs, but not entirely, the SFA (And SPFL and SPL - Why there's three football bodies in Scotland is bizarre) are supposed to be the ultimate governing body.

The SFA recorded a turnover of £40 million last year. What are they doing with it? Hiring a man who clearly isn't in a mentally or physically fit state to lead a bunch of footballers. Apart from that, what are they doing? Establishing a handful of performance schools doesn't really do it for me. Other countries have been doing that sort of thing since the 80s, in a far larger scale.

Hopefully the discontent gathers pace and strength. We've all had enough.

Boycotting is the way to go.  All the games are shown live on TV so you won’t miss it.

The ticket prices and kick off times are a joke anyway.    Appreciate that the kick off times are not the SFA’s fault but fuk going to a footygame on a Monday night etc..    What happened to the good old Saturday/ Wednesday (with the emphasis on Saturdays)   The fans should padlock shut their pockets and not give any cash to the SFA fat cat sponges.     Rod Petrie the latest quango??   Fk that guy.  Let him go and fix the fridge in some low budget porn movie or something with that tash of his.

I prefer going to a pub for a Scotland game anyway.  So much more fun and the money can be spent on beer or soft drinks.

funnily enough the next home match will be one of the most appealing (date wise) for supporters as it's a Saturday night so no rush for most fans to get back home.  unless you work Sundays which is unfortunate.

OP - there are only two professional bodies now.  SFA and SPFL (merger of SFL and SPL I recall).

I think Petrie's appointment as chair gives us one of the best opportunities for change for years.  so far as I know he has very few supporters in the press or from football fans, coupled with the fact that he knows very little about football.

it could be that we are thanking the SFA succession policy for once.

D'oh! Thanks for the head's up. I already knew that, just slipped my mind.

As far as making our voices heard, I'd actually welcome any show of chagrin. If we do it enough the media will catch wind of it and it'll put pressure on the SFA.

I also thought it was a bit unfair to say our clubs aren’t developing any players.

Motherwell have a great crop of young players coming through just now and I’m sure other clubs are bringing players through. Like McKenna at Aberdeen, Forrest and Mcgregor from Celtic....

However, the general point is correct. I can’t ever remember the tartan army being as vocally discontent as they were in San Marino.

The thought of 30,000 empty seats at the Cyprus game is the most likely thing to spark some action, although I think there’s a general feeling of being taken from granted with a lot of things from the SFA, ticket pricing being the main one. I understand their hands are tied with shite KO times, but should probably be a consideration when trying to sell tickets.

I take your point, Motherwell and Aberdeen are bringing through youngsters, and they're decent, but that's the thing, if the youngsters from those clubs were coached "better" from a younger age, and if the coaching was more focussed and more organized then these same kids would be much better.

If you take youngsters from Scotland and compare them to the equivalent youngsters from other certain nations there's a vast difference in quality. There must be a reason for this. It's because other nations coach kids in a professional and an organized manner, whereas we leave it up the parents to go the extra yard. Some people use the size of the country as an excuse, but I don't buy it. If we were the size of Brazil and we still had the same philosophies we would be hopeless and we'd only produce good players from sheer luck.

It's like Andy Murray, instead of staying home and being coached in a haphazard and sporadic way, he went to Barcelona to be coached properly.

I definitely agree about the degree of vocal discontent at the San Marino match. That was the only highlight for me.

"No, no, no, protesting is what these foreigners do. We are British and don't go for that kind of thing. Alex McLeish is a fine manager and will turn it around. And the SFA are doing their best for the country. People who boo are a disgrace"

Worryingly there actually are people who think like that.

if you think it will help I will set reminders in my calender/phone to come on here and post about how we should boycot games.  I'll do this just as public sales are annouced.  Might sway someone who is thinking of buying a ticket for a home game to change their mind.

Any ticket not bought takes money out of Petrie's Pret Manger fund that month.

Spot on mate the clubs aren't doing enough. And I don't even mean clubs such as Motherwell or Kilmarnock who have brought through decent players on the budget constraints they have to work with. I am talking about Celtic, Rangers specifically, then Hearts, Hibs and Aberdeen. Our biggest clubs. Apart from Celtic in recent seasons and even then I would only class Tierney as a top talent and potential big money player. How many top class players have they produced? The answer is none. None at all. Couple of decent players here and there but not one top class player has come from Scotland. Rangers and Celtic have to take the largest chunk of blame for that as they simply have the largest budgets and best facilities to produce these players but have chosen to bring mediocre foreigners into Scotland for the last 20 years. Hearts are doing it this season ffs. Probably our 3rd biggest club are full of mediocre foreigners. That is what is holding us back. I am not saying there should be no foreigners in our game, not when we enjoyed the likes of Larsson and Laudrup in Scotland but these guys were top talents, guys our players could learn from and even guys like Laudrup were surrounded by Scotsmen. We need our clubs to get back to that. The English Homegrown Rule should be implemented here on a larger scale. 25 man squads and 13 of that squad must be homegrown, 7 of those 13 should be homegrown by your own club. England currently have 25 with 8 homegrown players in each squad with plans to change it to 12. Let's get there first and push for this rule change.

I think we follow the Irish with the tennis ball event, and make it known it will happen before hand. That way they can't look at ticket gates and conclude those upset (though it won't be a sell out) are a vocal minority. They know it will be a financial  penalty so it's a double hit. And the online rally needs to start soon to force their hand.

Patrick v Hearts in the cup at Firhill, of the 18 in the Hearts squad  only 3 were Scots ,McLean age 35 , Berra 34 and Soutar.

What happened to all the promising  young Scottish players we saw at Hearts last season?

That is honestly a disgrace and the exact reason the National Side is where it is

I absolutely agree.

A homegrown rule should definitely be implemented here. I'd actually go a step further and bring back the old European cup three foreigner rule and implement into all 4 divisions. The clubs don't want to bring in Scottish players, they certainly don't want to bring them through the ranks, so let's see if actually forcing their hand will make any change. There's no way that Rangers and Celtic will want to fall behind one another, and what with their tit-for-tat mindset, they'll begin putting major time and resources into youth development, as a way of one-upping each other.

And Aberdeen with their new facilities coming soon..

But yes, Celtic and Rangers are as culpable as the SFA. Those two clubs have had resources and financial clout to dot youth academies all over Scotland, bring in good coaches and copy the framework of Holland, Belgium, France, etc. I mean, look at Barcelona over the years. They haven't been too proud to bring through their own. If the Old Firm would've went that route then just imagine how many great Scottish players they could've produced.

You aren't actually allowed to implement a rule forbidding foreigners to play in a squad anywhere in Europe, it is against European Law. Brexit may actually change that in this country but that's another topic. Anyway that is why England got around it by introducing a home grown rule which is open to any nationality but they have to have been trained for 3 years at an English club between the ages of 15 and 21 (they plan on changing this to between 15 and 18) which obviously massively decreases the chances of many foreigners being trained in England between those ages. Cesc Fabregas to use an example is currently 'home grown' in England as he was brought to Arsenal at 16. Now obviously he was actually home grown through the La Masia academy in Barcelona, the FA have identified this flaw and that is why they are reducing the age to between 15 and 18. Therefore in this instance Fabregas wouldn't have been home grown as he would have only been trained in England for two years from 16 to 18. Hope that makes some sense but it is definitely a rule which is the way forward here.
