There's no planets in the Solar System? Weird, I thought there were 8.

That's only because you let others do your thinking for you.

There are no aliens?

Correct.

 Isn't pride a sin?

It's the worst sin.

Isn't pride a sin? Pride is another word for pomposity. Pomposity is another word arrogance. And it's just like Man to be arrogant enough to believe that in the infinite and ever expanding Universe that there's only one intelligent lifeform.

There's the supernatural... God, angels, and fallen angels (demons).

And again, using the words that other people wrote and allowing them to think for you. "God" gave human beings free will to use their brains, I say you should try it sometime.

I do. I freely acknowledge the God of the Bible.

And I see that you've ignored the bit about religious leaders living the life of luxury whilst the great unwashed are either homeless or starving. I suppose turning a blind eye to the ills of the people who exploit the beliefs of others is an occupational thing, eh?

"But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction." 2 Peter 2:1

Are you a "born again"?

Of course.

I couldn't go to heaven otherwise.

Fortunately, I've never been close to being addicted to any substance.

Me, personally, I believe in me.

You're going to save yourself?

What power do you have to do that after you die?

10 minutes ago, Chripper said:

I have a healthy brain and I choose to use it.

Humble yourself, and engage your heart.

... I really feel sorry for you. And no, I'm not trying to be condescending. I truly am sorry for you, and people like you.

You won't feel that way at the end.

All Christians are born again...

John 3 "Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.  This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.”  Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

I wish you well.

And you!

Ach, don't be downheartened. Stick around till easter, it gets really batshit then. Just enjoy celebrating the winter solstice like people have done for thousands of years, long before all this baby jesus stuff.

Here's a fun fact for folk who like to celebrate the solstice.

Did you know that tomorrow will actually be the longest day of the year, and not the shortest, as most folk seem to think?

I think least amount of sunlight is what folk mean when they say shortest day.

Firstly, let me wish you a very Merry Christmas Scotty. Secondly, I feel it's my duty to let you know as a professional astronomer that there are 8 planets in our Solar System, all of which I have independently observed (you can in fact see 6 of them with your naked eye), and four of which are actually even mentioned in the Old Testament :)

In addition to this my work involved discovering other planets around other stars in the night sky. We've founds thousands to date, and it would be an awful shame if none of them contained intelligent life capable of understanding the glory of Faddy's goal in Paris, or the beauty in hearing 50,000 people sing Loch Lomond in unison.

But really none of this matters. The main thing that matters is that here on Earth we try to treat everyone else as we would like to be treated ourselves. That includes random people on an internet forum! I've found it a little lonely since moving to Oxford and leaving a large group of friends and family behind in Scotland. Even among them though, none quite share my passion for the Scotland team. So when I found the TAMB a few months ago it was a real revelation! Finally I had found a group of like-minded people I could chat to every day about my major passion. We don't always agree with each other hahaha, but we do all want the same thing in the end. I'd like to thank you all for welcoming me in and I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful 2019! Perhaps it will be the year we finally see another successful qualifying campaign...

Every days a learning day! Are you going to resurrect your 2016 happy solstice thread?

I can come up with two. Three if you count our motionless, enclosed plane (but that one isn't in dispute).

Is there a way you could prove to me that the other 'planets' are solid? (and not for example 'light').

Is there a way to prove to me that the moon and Mars are places that we might some day be able to land some sort of a craft on?

Best not to get your hopes up.

We all hold hands and sing Loch Lomond as we wade into the lake of fire?

Tell me... who Jesus Christ is to you.

I was indeed including our planet Earth in that list. Yes, there are many ways I can prove the planets are made of solid matter.

1. We can actually bounce radio waves off them to measure how far away they are, just like RADAR.
2. We have observed objects impacting their surface. Just like comet SL-9 smashing into Jupiter back in the mid-90s.
3. We have send multiple probes and rovers to the surface of various planets and moons (especially our Moon and Mars!). Just last week a team of people I work with saw the successful landing of one of their instruments on Mars as part of the InSight mission - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/InSight
4. 12 men have actually walked on the Moon. I've met 2 of them.
5. We see the effects of their gravity. We wouldn't have tides on Earth if it wasn't for the gravity of the Moon for example.
6. We see them block the light from the Sun. This happens all the time with Lunar eclipses, but also we've recently seen it happen with the transits of Venus and Mercury.
7. We actually have pieces of Mars that fall to Earth. Pieces of the Martian surface that were release in collisions in the early life of the Solar System are still floating through space and sometimes they enter the Earth's atmosphere as meteorites.
8. We can see the effect their mass has on the light of distant stars. Mass bends spacetime, and you can actually see the way the massive objects in space (like the Sun and Jupiter) bend the light from stars that are behind them.

No. That doesn't sound like fun at all.

To me Jesus is a biblical figure who is a symbol of hope to millions of humans. They believe he was the physical embodiment of God and he lived in a time when the existence of other planets was already a surprisingly well understood part of astronomy (they were named by the Ancient Greeks). The celebration of his birth gives rise to the most wonderful time of the year!

Only since 1995. I remain an eternal optimist.

You see Scotty, as the son of a devout Christian mother and an atheist father I am somewhat unsurprisingly an agnostic. I am a scientist who believes in what can be observed. But that doesn't rule out the existence of some higher power, and things we don't understand or haven't observed yet. I believe there is so much about this Universe that we don't understand, such as how it was created. What, or even who, started it? What I find confusing is that if you do believe in God, why would you dismiss his marvelous creations, such as the other celestial objects? It's like arguing that penguins don't exist! Surely you should embrace these wonders, not blindly deny their existence. In an earlier post you said to someone "That's only because you let others do your thinking for you.". Heed you own warning. Do your own thinking. Observe this wonderful Universe around you. No matter who or what created it, it's real and you can see it and touch it.

So three (including earth) and not four?

(And we can agree that Saturn isn't a solid?)

I can't do that from home.

I haven't, any more than I've looked through the Hubble telescope. I have to rely on 'official' people who could be telling me anything.

How come nobody knows anything then?

Why the bad infomercial actors pretending to be specialists?

It's embarrassing.

Did you get anything out of that press conference?

Why so many freemasons?

Why do you have to worship Lucifer to get into the club?

(Are you a freemason?)
