dan cake
Planning on heading across for at least 10 days, can anybody recommend places to visit outside Moscow and st Petersburg. Internal flights and trains seem cheap and frequent to most places

Will be updating it over the coming weeks and months.
wanderer
Some friends went to the world cup, and the general consensus was Yekaterinburg and Volgograd were the surprise hits of everyone who visited the World Cup (Kazan looked nice also, but a friend from Riga has basically been trying to sell me those two cities since the draw was made). McChouffe
Kazan definitely worth a visit, as are Volgograd & Nizhny Novgorod. If you want to go further afield and to a non football city, try Irkutsk. It's 5 or 6 hours from Moscow flying time, or 4 days on the Trans Siberian Express. It's near Lake Baikal if you like all the outdoorsy stuff. Forget Sochi, it's a long sprawled out city that goes on for about 80 miles. Close to Sochi is Rosa Khutor though. A ski resort in the winter and a mountain hiking place the rest of the year. October may not be so pleasant though. Moscow & St Pete are the obvious jewels in the crown and should not be missed. The Sapsan train connects the two cities in about four hours and is far less hassle than flying.
N4Footsoldier
Anyone got any plans for intercity travel elsewhere in Russia to come into Moscow for the game? Looking at alternative cities on the way out there
DoubleSC
May do a day trip from Moscow to St Petersburg. Morning flight out and night flight back coming in at 56 quid return. Same price if you come back another day.
Will-i-am77
I've only been to Moscow and Irkutsk (near Lake Baikal) which I recommend if you have the time. It's a long way though. I've heard Yekaterinburg is meant to be nice.
