We lack players, probably worst lot for years. When our centre forward is   32, lacking in pace and has a first touch like Billy Dodds then that sums us up.

Agree with the above. I keep reading on here that this is ‘or best group of players for years’.

No idea why people think that.

what do you consider to be the positives that we have seen under McLeish?

We beat Albania easily enough at home.

We actually looked pretty good in the first half against both Belgium and Portugal.

McLeish has selected some young players and looks to have possibly solved the central defensive worries (if Souttar and McKenna work out) that we have had for years.

Winning our Nations League group is still well in our own hands. If you had asked the majority of the TA at the start of the campaign if they would have taken needing a point in Albania (or maybe even a narrow defeat) and a win at home against Israel to top the group, I think most folk would have taken that.

Ok so there are also lots of negatives but people are talking as if we were fantastic under Strachan and McLeish has suddenly turned us into a shite team. We’ve been shite for years ffs.

As I have said countless times, if we lose in Albania and fail to beat Israel at home then McLeish has failed and should be sacked. Most folk on here want him sacked now when we can still, and probably will in my opinion, win our group and reach the playoffs.

Thousands already have stopped going!!

Absolutely but they haven’t done that as part of a mass boycott. Crowds have steadily been declining for years due to us not qualifying and the ridiculous prices the SFA like to charge.

We will still get decent crowds in our qualifiers against the bigger teams next year, particularly if we are competing in the  group.

This and "we have a strong midfield" myth.

When a midfielder emerges people usually roll their eyes and go all "we're well equipped in midfield".

We have about a dozen or so decent midfielders, but we don't have one from the top drawer.

We have won every single competitive home game. If he keeps up that record it will be a huge improvement over what we have had over the past 20 years.

I keep hearing this strong midfield myth too.... utter tosh.   When our midfield  is made up of players from Barcelona, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, I will say we have a strong midfield.  Players from Celtic, Aston Villa etc are average or below 8n international terms,

ALEX MCLEISH  (AKA The New Murinho)

POST 2007 AFTER SCOTLAND CAREER

Not going to quote the whole thing, but thats a cracking post, shows exactly that McLeish has been an abject failure since walking out on his country. Fuck him, and his defenders.

Whatever people think of Walter Smith, he's a million times better than McLeish.

The SFA should've snapped Smith up when they had the chance, instead of dithering and then appointing a manager who is a serial failure and someone who doesn't know whether he's coming or going.

Smith was interviewed. I agree a better manager than ginger but a bit negative tactics wise in my opinion.

The rumour I heard was that Smith was asked his views on the Peru/Mexico trip during the interview - remember this was at a point when there was a lot of controversy over it. Like I said this is unconfirmed, but quite believable - apparently he said he wanted to have a good relationship with the clubs and it should be scrapped which was not what the SFA wanted to hear. McLeish  during his interview was - as his later statements confirmed - in favour of it.

The only thing Smith has over McLeish is that he's not an incoherent jakey cunt. Both are yesterday's men. Football has moved on.

Yikes. A little bit strong but OK.

Smith would've been able to organize and forge a team-spirit, at the very least.

I didn’t want Smith anywhere near the job. I’d rather stick pins in my eyes. But if I had to I’d reluctantly have had Smith in ahead of McLeish.

But why were either of these two dinosaurs even considered? Smith has been out of the game management-wise for donkeys years and McLeish has been nothing short of an abject failure in every job he’s been near since he walked out on us.

They are both yesterday’s men and in McLeish’s case an appallingly terrible manager in addition. That either, never mind both, of them were even considered for the job speaks volumes about the SFA.

I doubt McLeish was truly in favour of the Peru/Mexico trip but he’ll have said he was all in favour of it during the interview as he was so desperate for a job he’d have agreed to anything.

We need fresh blood in the role now and someone with a proven track record at elite level. Instead of drawing up a list of those they think they might like to appoint and limiting it to who they’d think might be interested, why not invite applications and see who really is interested? We might all be surprised...

I will support the team 100% whilst they’re on the park and I will still hope and pray McLeish proves me and all his doubters wrong.  I will celebrate wildly and eat as much humble pie as I can find if he does. But I will not back him now as I know deep down he will not. And I suspect most of the TA know pretty much the same in their heart of hearts.  The man is a failure as a manager, has been for over ten years solid and there are zero signs to even suggest that this has the remotest chance of changing any time soon. We should get rid now.

Sadly, international football is a retirement home for old managers.

There are a few, like Klinsmann for example, who specialise in international management or like Martinez who kind of fall into it after getting sacked by a club but realise they like it who buck the trend but most young managers wouldn’t touch the Scotland job with a shitty stick.

People like you that bump their gums about not wanting McLeish or Smith (what are your credentials to judge these men so harshly by the way?) seem to forget that nobody else better wanted the job. Anyone who was truly interested could have applied for it, just as McLeish did. The SFA didn’t go cap in hand to him to ask him to take the job. He applied and was deemed the best man for the job, after two managers (one old and one who was deemed a shite manager before being a success with NI) turned them down.

The SFA don’t have £4 million a year to throw at Jurgen Klinsmann or whoever. That’s even if he would take the job, which is doubtful.

Even the young(ish) Scottish managers that a lot of fans would like to see in charge (McInnes, Clarke etc.) don’t want to be a part time manager. They’d be bored out of their tits most of the time. You can’t exactly blame them either as sections of the TA seem to want a manager sacked after one bad performance or result.

McLeish certainly wasn’t my first choice as Scotland manager but he’s in charge at the moment and he should be given the chance to succeed. If he doesn’t, he’ll be sacked. If he does, we’ll qualify and can all enjoy Euro 2020.

Aye, Giggs and Southgate prove that.

Don’t quote part of a post to try and disprove it. I did say there are exceptions.

Managing England or Wales is far more attracting than managing us at the moment, sadly.

I doubt any young up and coming manager  would fancy managing Scotland.

Joachim Low was appointed in his mid 40s. Martinez isn't exactly retirement age......etc etc

I take it you didn’t read my full post then?

I meant in general. It’s certainly not as bad as it used to be in terms of old geezers in international management but there is still a high percentage of them.

If Scotland had reached the semis of the last Euros or had one of the best teams in the world, I reckon Clarke, McInnes or even young foreign managers would fancy the job. As it stands at the moment they wouldn’t touch it.

It’s not even really about age. I suppose if a decent young manager (like McLeish 10 years ago) was out of a job they might take it. How long before they jump ship at the first decent offer from a club though? I can’t see Giggs being in charge of Wales for much longer. Old Trafford by the end of the season?
