I put this in the General Travel section but i've a feeling not many people check that these days as it's a bit hidden.....

I'm heading down to Liverpool at the weekend and will be taking in the undoubted 0-0 that will be Everton v Fulham!  Anyone got any recommendations of decent places for food and drink?  Staying 2 nights in the Cavern Quarter area.  Would also welcome any suggestions of things to see/do (other than The Beatles Story down at the docks as we've done that) if anyone has any!

Anywhere in Matthew Street is buzzing especially the big wetherspoons which you could spend all night in. It reminded me of the one in Cardiff which was basically pub/restaurant/ nightclub rolled into one. The Peaky Blinders pub is a novelty if you're a fan of the show but otherwise not great. If you like Chinese food there are some cracking eateries in Chinatown, reasonable too,, just ask a local.

Edited to add there's a big inflatable assault course wipeout style down near Albert Dock if you're looking for something different. We did it on a stag recently and it was some laugh! 😁

Watched Scouse Derby in McCooley's on Concert Square back in April.

Was worth it for the wee barmaids. Table service and scran was decent.

Cheers.  Think LIverpool are playing Chelsea at half 5 same day so might check that place out for that.  I'm sure the missus will love the barmaids!

If you're at all interested in the Beatles take the National Trust bus to Lennon & McCartney's childhood houses.  An absolutely fascinating couple of hours.

I sang a couple of bars in the front porch at Mendips where John used to practice his guitar. Quite an emotional moment actually  (not for anyone that heard me obviously!)

Button Street Smokehouse has amazing sliders and generally good food, go see the war memorial in the building across from Lime street station in the cellar (town hall I think). There is a Central Perk not much further if your other half is into Friends. Do a ferry crossing its superb for photos. Too much stuff to do in Liverpool mate, Ive been 4 times for a long weekend and still not seen half of it. You can also go up the radio tower in the centre of town.

How has no one mentioned the Maritime Museum ?  quite simply the best museum I have ever been in ( I have be in a few to not nerd like numbers)  and  I will still call in when I am in town , covers customs and excise , slavery, emigration, WW1, WW2 Titanic , rise and fall of the transatlantic liners, modern sea faring  etc

Stunning museum, also free in ( though they do suggest a £5 donation which you should do ) you will not be disappointed (Titanic in Belfast charges £18 for a series of videos )

As to eats and drinks , never had a bad meal in the Novotel in hanover street  and always liked the fly in the loaf hardman street

Leave the missus in the hotel and head for Concert Square.  :wink2:

Joking aside, the Shipping Forecast on Slater Street is a good bar.  If you're just looking for bar type food the burgers in there are very good indeed.  If you're looking for something a bit more substantial and you like Indian food, try Mowglis on Bold Street.  They specialise in Indian street food, as opposed to curries, but it's great stuff and the staff are really helpful if you're stuck.  I believe the same people have opened another restaurant in Water Street (near where you're staying) but I haven't had a chance to pay it a visit.

You could quite easily have a wee night on Matthew Street alone.  The Cavern is obviously well worth a look and if you can overcome your Irish bar aversion I'd recommend Flannagan's Apple - possibly the best Irish bar I've been in side side of the Irish sea.  There are a couple of neddy places at the other end of the street that should be avoided: some 80s/90s retro bar, cannae mind its name, and another that was apparently owned by gangsters and felt like it (again, the name escapes me).

The Maritime History museum is worth a look and nearby is the Tate, if art is your thing.  I haven't been but there's a British music museum just up the road, also in the docks area, which appeals to me anyway.

Like most cities it has a wee bit of an edge in places (although no worse than Glasgow) but it's  a great city and the people are brand new.  Wherever you end up I'm sure you'll have a great time.

That's a good shout as well.  The Philharmonic at the other end of Hardman Street is worth a visit too, even if only for the decor - it feels like being in a Victorian gentleman's club!

I’d say Liverpool is one of the best cities I’ve been to for a night out. Been to the same Chinese a couple of times and liked it, it’s on the main road near Mathew street beside a train station.

Couldnt give you names of specific pubs, but Mathew Street has the feel of a holiday  “strip” about it, a bit tacky and neddy, so you’ll see some sights. Concert square a bit more upmarket.

Liked Goodison too, has a bit of character about it, without that being code for it being a complete dump.

Enjoy.

I can't add much to the tourist/nightlife suggestions, but if you're looking for a pre-match pub, I went to the Flat Iron last season which was decent enough. If you prefer a more traditional approach, about 100 yards down the road there's a petrol station & around 50-60 lads necking Carling on the forecourt.
