So you're predicting a draw then?

:P

I predict a Wolves win. They're used to the formation, they've been playing with it for a number of years now.

Take note Scotland fans, United have a better squad, by several miles, but Wolves are bridging the gap by squeezing the pitch.

Wolves are much better than Scotland. And have a far better manager!

McTominay's slack pass forced Smalling to lunge and get sent off.

In fairness to McTominay, there was three defenders between Young and De Gea,  so Young should've left it alone.

In fairness to Young, he did get the ball.

Never a red card.

Nice goal from McTominey. Yet somehow bombscare mcginn gets a game ahead of him.

That should be the two who sit infront of the back 4 if 4-2-3-1 is continued in the next round of fixtures by whichever manager. Central midfield is all about the three players all having balance, one defensive, one box to box and one who can make late runs into the box.

Must say I missed the memo where McGregor seems to be this undroppable player. He's certainly not way ahead of McGinn or Armstrong, all very marginal.

When Scotland play a 4-2-3-1 we get stuck with 6 players behind the ball and only 4 ahead of it. We lack so much creativity that we need more than 3 attacking midfielders.

The 4-2-3-1 formation only has 2 central midfielders with two wide midfielders and one attacking midfielder. In other words, we get swarmed in midfield.

We need to squeeze the park by playing 3 in defence, 3 in the middle of midfield and 2 in attack.

Probably true but ultimately there is no formation that will make Scotland world class or at least a tournament ready team.

Big problems remain in that there is no decent CF to build around given McBurnie has yet to step up to national level and how weak all the CBs are. And that was certainly brutally exposed in Kazhakstan.

Let's be honest, we're weak in defence, midfield and in attack.

The "solution" is to pack those areas and put extra bodies there, as opposed to playing less players through the middle and being constantly exploited.

McTominay can do it all. 1 man midfield is all we need

McTominay and Gilmour in midfield. Fraser Hornby up front. Only Scotland seem to have a phobia about giving caps to young talent in favour of journeymen. Kris Boyd made the same point recently and added in the introduction of Fletcher and Faddy which Vogts got grief for.

It’s been mentioned on here a few times, but it hasn’t done Wales any harm.

Good point. I would have no problem giving Hornby his debut this year.

The likes of James McFadden, Darren Fletcher and Craig Gordon would have had to wait another three or four years under most other managers. The saintly "Walter" would never have given them their debuts so young.

True. Absolutely fucking true. But we frequently wait until a player is about 24 or 25 to make their debut.

Was just scrolling through a Man Utd forum........some fans just can’t accept that McTominay might be a very good player.

These are the kind of idiots that just want big money signings and whose football knowledge is confined to their FIFA video game.

Curious why the Hornby hype.

His u21s record is.. bang average. Setting aside a hattrick against Andorra's u21s, the goals return is not impressive.
He's never played a minute in the premier league.
It's almost 2 years since his one and only Everton first team appearance.
He seems to just get barely a handful of goals in the u21s each year.

Can understand if people think there's potential there, but the idea that he should be being called up and played seems utterly unwarranted.

I don't remember Vogts getting grief for playing Fletcher and McFadden.  Indeed it was quite the opposite - it was one of the few things he did right.

He got grief for playing players like Cummings, Canero, Murty, Gray and WIlliams.

Personally, I don't think we can bring in players like Gilmour and Hornby before they've played any first team football.  We have plenty of options playing at a good level and the young players need to earn their places.  Imagine going to Russia and playing some youngsters that have never played first team football and losing 5 or 6-nil.  It could be bad for their development.

Not sure I agree.  Tierney was 18, McKenna 21, Souttar 21, Burke 18, McTominay 21, McBurnie 21. Ok, not exactly loads of teenagers but still young.

The real youngsters (under 20) like Gilmour and Hornby haven't played first team football and, sadly, when younger lads do play they're jumped on.

Other nations (like Wales) have given teenage players with little or no club experience a game and sometimes they've done remarkable.

Why do we have to be the exception ? Typical Scottish backward thinking, scared of shaking it up.

I too hate the 'wait till they're 23' mentality. I know no manager actually thinks like this but that's always how it seems to pan out. Thus, we always end up with patchy and inexperienced squads, and seems to celebrate 50 caps as if it is hugely impressive.

That said...

I really really want Hornby and Gilmour to make the grade for us, but they're not even on their clubs' benches for diddy cup ties or anything (bar a solitary run out for Hornby in the Europa League). At least Ampadu for Wales was getting a sniff of action at Chelsea.

If, say, Hornby got a few appearances for Everton under his belt in a short-ish space of time, I wouldn't be all for taking the gamble. As it stands it would seem like desperation to call him up now. We just don't know if he's an EPL-level striker or a Rotherham-level striker yet.

When players haven't played any first team football like Gilmour and Hornby its easy to mythologise them, same as with Harper who's out of sight so that way you can make them out to be whatever you want them to be. The reality is Hornby seems to just be an average Under-23 level striker who has some chance of breaking through at Everton but probably a lot  more chance of ending up at Rochdale but as he's hidden from view largely people can make him out to be the new Van Basten and our striking saviour based on netting a few goals against Andorra Under-21's..

No one is claiming he's the next Dalglish at all.

Twenty or thirty minutes off the bench.

Others countries do it why do we have to be the exception ?
