Wc And Euro Sqaud Selections In The Past

Even with all the problems, we played magnificently in Euro 92.

Think Euro 92 was the first time we took it serious.

Stein clearly preferred the World Cup, taking it more serious, and my first memories of scotland was the euro 88 qualifiers, and we never seemed to play a settled side, and every game seemed to have a feel of trying out new things, with the real aim to have the team ready for the World Cup qualifiers.

Euro 92 we had a nightmare of a qualifying group, and though made hard work of it, we got out of it and made the finals (were we got another group of death, yet played some good football).

Remember before Euro 96 he was seriously talking about calling up a Scottish boy who was out playing in Hong Kong.

Seriously ?

Any idea who he was ? Could imagine the reaction on here if Strachan called up someone from the Chinese or Hong Kong Leagues.

Totally agree with the late 80s/early 90s period being a what if' dissapointment.Think it strarted with the appointmet of Roxburgh. seen an interview with Stevie Nicol on liverpool recently where he was asked about his international career. he basically said after the death of Stein the players were utterly deflated for a long period to an extent where players including himself just didnt want to turn up and Roxburgh's appointment only compounded things for the sqaud.

Thought Durrant was a huge loss also. a midfiel of him mcstay and mccall could of been something special with durrant pushed on.

to be fair , Nicol never really showed up much at international level - he rarely emulated his club form through the 80s

he's likley still searching for excuses for the miss v Uruguay

Honestly can not remember his name.

It was the build up to Euro 96 and we could not even buy ourselves a goal, and Brown highlighted this in a interview he gave, and said he was examining every option available and name dropped a boy playing in Hong Kong who he claimed had a eye for goal.......

Durie then goes and scores a hatrick in the Scottish Cup final and is instantly re-installed as first choice striker.

Yes, I also recall the reports at the time of his throwing his boots into the crowd. He was an exceptional talent who badly needed to get away from the going downhill Premier League and what was fast becoming a dire Celtic team. I wonder, though, whether he was just too scared to come out of his comfort zone: as far as I recall, he was a shy, modest devoutly religious young family guy from Glasgow, and I wouldn't be surprised if the thought of moving to a foreign culture, language and climate with his wife and kids was just too daunting for him.

Aye, probably had his comfort zone and was happy to stay in it, which was a shame as the Celtic team at that time were terrible and surprised he never tried to escape while all the backroom troubles were happening.

Brown in his book says he played him against Austria at Celtic Park as a kind of reward for his services to Scotland..... McStay had told Brown that injuries had caught up with him and he was going to announce his retirement from football in the coming weeks, but Brown told him not to do it before he had one last outing with Scotland, and only fitting that it should be at Celtic Park (think he brought him on for last 2 minutes)
