If St Mirren win the championship they'll be the 13th best team in Scotland.

They can't be higher than any of the SPFL teams as they haven't been playing against them during the season.

Same logic applies with Nations League. Croatia finishing third to Spain and England is a better achievement than the Czechs who topped a group with Slovakia and Ukraine.

False logic but I know what you mean.

In your example, once the new season starts, St Mirren would not be the 13th best team in Scotland would they?

It just seems a bit shite that the best we can possibly manage is pot 3 and that was decided well over a year before the qualifiers start. Not that we would have been likely to make pot 2 anyway to be fair.

Of course St. Mirren won't be the 13th best team in Scotland when new season starts. But the NL and the Euro2020 qualifiers are two different competitions.

The NL rankings were decided by UEFA co-efficients (2018 WC q, Euro 2016 + qualifiers, WC 2014 + qualifiers), and the NL maintains that with minimal changes.

Going by your logic we could be relegated from Division C as the worst 3rd place team and find ourselves in Pot 5 for the 2020 qualifiers. Or, you could have N. Ireland in Pot 1 (having won their Division B group) with Spain relegated and finding themselves as a Pot 2 team. Both those cases would be ridiculous.

Yeah, it's a bit shit that the highest we can be is Pot 3, but realistically, that's our level at the moment.

Without the new Nations League the pots for the qualifiers would already have been decided anyway - and we’d have been in pot three. In fact the draw would likely have been made by now too.

So we’ve not really lost out anyway, we just don’t get the opportunity to benefit from something we’d not previously have been able to benefit from anyway.

Aye but we could still end up in pot 4 if we make an arse of our group.

That is true and if we get relegated to pot 4 we’ll deserve it 100%!

Fair point.

We might not need to get relegated to end up pot 4 though. Second place in our group might do it. Still, we’ll end up where we end up.
