I'm with Ricky Gervais on Brexit.

Most people are idiots.

In this country we need labels on bottles of bleach saying 'Do Not Drink'

Take the label off for two years then have a referendum.

And yet if REMAIN had won those people would be praising the good people of great Britain and n Ireland for doing the right thing.  They 'd also be saying the referdum is binding and no need for a 2nd one.

Hypocrisy and face palmisim.

Remain or Leave voters were not mentioned. So can't see the hypocrisy but feel free to face palm as  strenuously as you like.

Map shows how Brexit affects all of Scotland

I can't see how it works, at such a level of detail. For example it distinguishes the topmost bit of Lewis frpm the next subdivisions down, etc etc.  As far as I can see most comments are about Shetland...

UK fishing exports 'could be halted within 48 hours of no deal'

"the UK lacks the army of vets and health authority officials who would need to be at the ready to certify the huge volumes of shellfish landed in Scotland or Northern Ireland for export to the continent"

Plan for Stranraer lorry park if no-deal Brexit happens

Some detail when you drill down (zoom in);  a few streets in some areas.   Click for link

Therefore I thought it was just house-price based  :o .   Click on an area and the data must come from censuses (for the street-by-street bit) on top of local authority stuff.   Doesn't look great for Stranraer dockland despite a possible(?) no-deal lorry customs boom.

Northern Ireland is a burden on the rest of the UK. We can't let it get in the way of Brexit [Telegraph]

Is the British establishment prepared to cut northern Ireland loose?

Will the Tories be happy to give NI an EU deal that it denies Scotland?

They always were. John Grey man Major admitted it when he was PM when he said the Ingerland had no economic or strategic interest in the six counties but will the knuckle trailing yoons see it. Will they fuck.

The DUP being as staunch as possible till the end here.

The DUP have a real problem here.  On one hand, I can totally see - from their perspective - why they need to be as hardline as possible to appease their core support however, they need to take into account that NI as a whole voted against Brexit and that wasn't just the Nationalist community.  There'll be significant minority of DUP voters - particularly those in border areas - who will be against any kind of border both for economic and security concerns.   Now I don't for a second see any of these people voting for Sinn Fein or the SDLP but they could conceivably shift to the UUP which could cost them seats in any upcoming election.  There's also talk of an informal pact between Sinn Fein and the SDLP to stand aside in certain constituencies.  There's a couple of constituencies where if you take the SF and SDLP vote, it's larger effort than the incumbent DUP vote (based on 2017) and importantly, one of those is Nigel Dodds.

I think they're between a rock and a hard place here, a position of their own making

So... Boris has got a new deal.

Let's see how on earth they are going to get it through parliament.

The noises coming out of Labour are that they would maybe back a deal based on a confirmatory referendum - but that just can not be palatable to the Tories. It would mean the very real prospect of the whole thing being overturned, being back to square one and the Tory party tearing themselves apart over Europe (the whole thing that the referendum and Brexit was trying to avoid). Not to mention what it would mean for the country and the 50% of the population who would see their initial democratic choice denied.

Going to be another interesting few days.

TBH, who really knows how this will play out.

I wonder if Johnson's calculations are that if the deal doesn't get through, he'll be forced into a extension which will almost certainly lead to an election.  He'll then blame that on both the opposition *and* the DUP and he hopes to get a big enough majority he isn't reliant on support from any other party and so can then get this deal passed.

Yep. I think it's exactly that.

He can say that he's done his bit and got a deal. Gets to blame the DUP for not playing ball and then blame Labour for unreasonable demand of confirmatory referendum to pass the deal through parliament which he can't accept.

Allows him to demonstrate that others have forced an unwanted extension and then he takes that forward into the election campaign fought on Brexit.

Well he has but he hasn't. The DUP will not vote for it in its current guise and that almost sinks it straight away.

The DUP are thinking of their precious union here and wanting to keep Northern Ireland as closely tied to it as possible. They fear that Stormont having a say in whether to extend the agreement (which they would not back) would be passed by the greater numbers of nationalist parties and they cannot stomach that.

There aren't greater numbers in the Nationalist parties.  The current situation is that there are more anti-Brexit MLAs in Stormont though that's why they don't want a simple majority vote.

The current breakdown is (90 seats):

Unionist (DUP, UUP, TUV, Independent) 40
Nationalist (SF, SDLP) 39
Non-Alligned (Alliance, Green, PPP) 11
