The Brexit Thread

Theresa May is making a statement from Downing Street at 10pm

Dont expect it to be anything other than the same old waffle but you never know

Fighting to keep the whole UK in the EU/SM/CU is a strategy which will look good when it all falls apart ....unless of course the whole UK stays in the EU/SM/CU

However the latter still looks impossible

So it's gone from being "May way or the highway" to being a cross party consensus.  Perhaps Theresa could've considered such an option earlier than 2 months before Brexit.

Hard to imagine after yesterday's annihilation but Corbyn's probably had a worse day than the PM.

This is just rhetoric and playing to the gallery

Corbyn wont even meet her till she takes No deal off the table

The SNP and the Lib Dems did meet her to tell her no deal should be off the table, there should be a second referendum and article 50 should be halted

Half of the Tories want to delay article 50 for a year and have a "managed" no deal

And Theresa May says we are leaving the EU

Just throwing this out there, no idea how likely this is but madder things have happened.

With Corbyn seemingly refusing to even engage with the UKG, it looks unlikely that they can make any progress towards getting a deal.

I wonder whether they - the UKG - might say the only way to break the impasse is to take it back to the people with another referendum *but* put the blame on Corbyn for that.  We know Corbyn doesn't want another referendum anyway and this could turn the Brexiteers on him for "ignoring the will of the people".

Had considered this , If its going to be a fuckup them blame someone else, Corbyn being the prime target.

2 and a half years to get to this? The government has no intention of delivering Brexit and probably never had. Leaving the EU shouldn’t be this complicated.

Shouldn't be, unless you want all the benefits of membership without any of the conditions.

Treesa now refusing to extend Article 50 (even if offered by Brussels)

Shes a fekking nutter,

I suspect she will be brought down by her own side who will prefer a new leader (and prob confident of winning). And if they lose then Jezza can take the blame for the inevitable fukk up.

What an utter shambles.

Not thru the normal channels agreed. As they keep saying on TV - these are extraordinary times.

I can envisage the "right" assisting to defeat their own Gov when Jezx brings his next no-confidence motion.

EDIT: Libdems now saying they will not support another no-confidence vote unless Labour support another referendum. Cool - this could finish Treesa and Corbyn.

Time for SNP to say they won't support another no-confidence vote unless Labour support another kind of referendum? 😉

But then...  surely the SNP should be extracting concessions specific to Scotland? If not an actual 2nd referendum, then any sort of special status for Scotland, or anything at all that is distinctive to Scotland, or allowing different solutions in the different nations - that the EU may also agree? - that could pave the way for a looser UK? Or it could be wholly domestic in nature - what if they demanded that agriculture and fisheries were fully and wholly devolved to Holyrood?

Assuming that the only parliamentary majority for a deal would be some sort of soft Brexit deal, the ultra Brexity tories and DUP would be voting the other way anyway, so even if the concessions 'weakened the union' the other (pro new deal) parties may accept it if it delivered a deal avoiding crashing out.

The deal is on a knife edge if it is going to go through; now is the time to make demands.  'Treesa'  has already 'used' the SNP in last night's  no. 10 propaganda - using the fact of dialogue with SNP (as with the Lib Dems and Paid) to make Corbyn look bad. But no point in propping up May without Scotland-specific concessions.

The SNP should be staying well clear of all this, shouting for another referendum could very well haunt them

It will only haunt them if the UK stays in the EU

It is a strategy IMO

A second referendum would divide England even further while Scotland will most likely come together more

Scottish sub sample YouGov poll (14th Jan) (changes v 2017 GE)

SNP: 47% (+10%)

Con: 24% (-5%)

Lab: 14% (-14%)

LD: 8% (+1%)

Green: 5% (+5%)

Probably a win-win for the SNP in that case. I don't think Nicola Sturgeon will be too disappointed if Brexit is stopped.

I honestly didn’t understand why Corbyn called the no confidence motion without any Tories  telling him they would support it - just seems like empty posturing.

That's exactly what it was. Jezza hasn't got a clue what he wants or what he's doing.

If there is any negotiation of this sort going on, the absolute minimum that the SNP should go for, is not a Section 30 for another referendum, but the powers to hold referendums transferred to Holyrood. So that the SG can hold a referendum, on any subject at any time they choose to do it.

You think they'll need another one?
