Not a good result for her. According to Rees Mogg out of 167 mp's who are not directly on May's payroll 117 voted against her.

That would imply that 70% of backbenchers were against her. That's not an endorsement of her leadership.

Doesn't look good. How is she supposed to get any policies through if they all vote against her?

A group of us are discussing whether some of these Conservative MPs would vote against the government in a confidence vote in the Commons. Even two or three could tip the balance against the Government.

Looks like JRM is one of them. He said "she clearly does not have the confidence of the house of commons". Can we take from that that he and his ERG mates would vote against their own government?

It will be an interesting few day's. Opposition parties need to make a move or will they wait for a tory implosion?

Zero chance of that happening, turkeys won't vote for Christmas.  They might - and probably will - vote against the Brexit deal but they won't vote against the government in a confidence vote.

Why did 40 odd turkeys do exactly that in 1979? (I cannae mind, i was still on breastmilk at the time!)

The result displays what we knew. She in no way has enough support to get her Brexit-lite deal through. That being the case she should stand down as the UK will be staring at a No Deal Brexit.

I cannot see Labour pushing through a vote of no confidence as nobody wants to handle this Brexit situation as nobody has a solution to it.

Hmm... not sure where i got that idea from. Thanks for the link

Found the source of my confusion... 34 Labour rebels added the 40% rule to the devolution for Scotland bill. It was this that prompted the SNP to bring down the government.

Callaghan apportioned blame to those Labour rebels for bringing down his government....

"I have since wondered whether those thirty-four Labour Members would have voted as they did if they had been able to foresee that their votes on that evening would precipitate a General Election in 1979, at the least favourable time for their Government.”"

"1979 No Confidence vote and death

On 28 March 1979 the government faced a knife-edge vote of no confidence when Broughton was on his death bed. Broughton's doctors were extremely concerned for him and strongly advised him not to travel. Although he was willing to come down to vote, Prime Minister James Callaghan decided it would be obscene to ask him to do so, in case he died during the ambulance journey. In the event, the government lost by one vote; had Broughton been present, it would have survived. Broughton died five days later, aged 76."

Imagine if the poor bastard had died in the HoC. Would have brought a whole new meaning to the terms 'die in a ditch' or 'die on a hill' for a cause.
