fringo
Thoughts ? Scores of athletes could be stripped of their world records under new proposals from European Athletics. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/athletics/39777772 Seems extreme and completely wrong to me. phart
Probably a response to all the positives and dodginess going on behind the scenes, that Radclife WR is the biggest outlier in world athletics. More so than than the eastern bloc 80's records. They're trying to give the impression of clean sports by resetting the records. Rather than going after all the cheaters. phart
For example El Guerrouj set his records when there were no EPO tests, but people were using it. It's such an advantage that when it came to be used in cycling by Italian teams, you had a situation where 3 italian team mates would just ride off the front of the peleton and the whole peleton couldn't reel them back in. Greg Lemond had to abandon a race as it was too fast and he was a 3 time tour champion.
Orraloon
This is a classic case of doing something just so you are seen to be doing something, even if it is the wrong thing to do. How can they possibly think that cancelling old records will have any effect on whether current athletes will use drugs or not? There is just no logical connection. A PR exercise for the benefit of the public and sponsors.

That was exactly my first thought.

Caledonian Craig
Ridiculous idea and one that paints every single athlete as a drugs cheat by deleting their records. Many of those record holders as well underwent drugs tests as well. Pretty pathetic. By all means expunge records if they have hard evidence they were obtained by drug use - if they can't do that then they should remain.
