Excuse my ignorance but what is the story with aberlour abundh? I thought this was a standard produce of the brand which had “limitless”supply?

Maybe it's a specific batch number of the A'bunadh he likes?

I don't think my palate is that discerning.   No, I was just naming some more favourites, that I can still buy.   I've no idea about future availability of any whisky.

I could easily develop a serious problem with Ardbeg. I was never a big fan of peated whisky but that changed my mind. I stayed up the road from the Port Ellen maltings a couple of years back & woke up to the smell most mornings (as well as managing to visit every one of the distilleries, plus Jura as well).

On the issue of Islay whiskies, I tried to order a Laphroaig a week or two back when I had the misfortune to find myself in Northampton. The guy spent a good couple of minutes arguing with me that they didn't have that one, even though I could see the bottle & (literally) had to spell it out for him.

Did you manage to get to the Kilchoman farm Distillery? They seem to be getting the best reviews for their tours plus they do a lovely Cullen Skink in their wee cafe.

There's also another new Distillery opening on the road round to Bunnahabhain. Not sure of dates for that one yet but will let you know.

Apparently the wife's cousin is now the curator at Laphroaig but I do know if there's a fire in his house any fireman up his loft will go with a smile on his face when the place explodes. 😳

I've had a fair few conversations on distillery tours about old, ultra-expensive bottles, & the impression I get is that no-one really would know the difference in the real world. If you offered most people (say) a taste from half a dozen £50-£70/bottle single malts & hid a £500 nip in there, other than by luck no-one would pick out the fancy one.

They are generally aimed at collectors (as in probably never to be drunk) & a couple of bottles to take centre stage on display in local pubs for moron tourists (often, I imagine, with appalling prejudice, American) to flash some cash & pretend they know more than they do.

On Islay, in Duffies it was German tourists that were splashing the cash recently. Also the occasional Japanese guy but certainly the bigger groups were German.

Yes we went to the farm shop - I think we got it on a bad day as they'd run out of a lot of stuff but it was nice (the distillery tour was closed as well).

I have a watercolour print of Bunnahabhain on my living room wall :)

I did the Laphroaig tour when I was there. The grist mill was being serviced by a bloke who lived a few miles away from me - apparently, quite a few of them around Scotland were made in Leeds & they are still serviced & maintained by specialist companies from this part of the world.

Sorry you didn't hit Kilchoman on one of their better days. It really is a good place for lunch.

Theyre building a new still next to the existing one and the Distillery has bought the farm to ensure their supplies too.

Lot of expansion in the last 2 years or so.

Ardnahoe :ok: Construction was just starting the last time I was over. They're advertising cask purchases so I don't imagine it'll be long before it's open.

That's the one. Thanks for that. Saves me asking the father in law and showing up my senility. 😀

wonder what that will do for the price of our bottles?  A lot of reviews of the whisky say its excellent.  Mine could become endangered one cold winters evening. 😉

There was Rosebank sampling at Falkirk Whisky Festival couple of weeks ago. They were showing the artists impressions of the new distillery.

I’ve never commented on this thread yet but as I’m sitting in my local my landlady has just brought in a bottle of “Fire And Cane” Glenfiddich. I’ve never seen this before. It has a toffee tinge to it but is still full strength and is divine. 😍

Every time I find a new favourite, they run out :(

Glen Grant 5   (which got me started)

Bailie Nicol Jarvie   (is it coming back?)

Glengoyne 17   (the 18 is inferior IMO and twice the money)

Glen Turret 10   (they probably ruin what stocks they still have/make it by blending it into Grouse)

Bladnoch 10   (distillery closed; now re-opened selling 10X price stuff in perfume bottles)

Old Pulteney WK499   (was an airport special; the expensive 21yo is similar)

Glencadam 15   (disappeared after yon bassa on YouTube made it his whisky of the year)

Get these now before I drink them dry anaw...    Benriach 16,   Aberlour a'Bubadh,   Lagavulin 16,   Tomintoul 14,   Powers Signature.

I believe that Glen Turret is under new owners and will have nothing to do with Grouse..

Anyone drink following

Macallan Edition 2

Macallan Edition 3

Macallan Edition 4

Edition 1 came out 2 years ago and the 60/80 quid is now auctioned at around 600 pounds

80 quid bottles of the above selling for 160-180

The later bottles won't reach those heights.  Initially released at 750ml for Taiwan and then the States.  Very few bottles at 700ml!

The Benraich 16yo has to be one of the best value whiskies out there.  Superb stuff.  Be warned on the Aberlour, i think it's about 60% and needs tamed a bit with water.

Have a bottle of Rosebank I inherited from my late Dad.  Looked online and its worth roughly £200.

Anyone tried it?  Its the 12 year old version.  Believe it was a distillery near Falkirk that closed early 90's?

I think we've had this chat before?  Anyway, we moved into a new house 5 years ago.  Found a bottle of 16yo Rosebank in cupboard in the utility room - unopened, still in box etc.  I have around 120 whiskies in a "working" collection i.e. only a couple are off limits to mates/family when they are round. I thought my (now) wife had bought the Rosebank as a present and was hiding it.  However, she knew nothing about it. Knowing this is an expensive dram, i thought the right thing to do was to return it to the previous house owners.  The folk who sold the house had moved to Oz before we bought it so never met/came across them. Tried contacting them via selling agent and explained why.  4.5 years later, I've heard nothing from them or agent.

The bottle remains unopened, however, it's out of the box and on display in my cabinet.  A Google suggests it's worth between £600-£800. Not sure how much longer i can hold off largely because (and in response to your question), it's apparently fantastic stuff. Your dad clearly had excellent taste.

come to think of it, I think we have! haha.  If the bottle is worth around £200 to £300 I might as well just enjoy the bloody thing!  Next Hibs Scottish Cup or Scotland qualification to World Cup,  its on!  (might be a long wait... ;o)   )
