Jack Straw Wants To Outlaw Future Referendums

Recommended Posts

I know this is mentioned in another thread, but I believe it needs a thread of its own.

Jack straw is quoted in the Times as saying that Westminster should enshrine a law that says "This Union is now indissoluble"

He is quoted as saying: "If independence would have been for good, so must the decision to stay. You can't pull a living plant up by the roots again and again, and expect it to survive. Put this commitment to the Union is primary Westminster legislation."

Story at http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/opinion/columnists/article4212654.ece but it's behind their paywall

I knew they would come out with this at some point, but I didn't think it would be so quickly.

It's probably a good thing that everything is unravelling so quickly. The promises will be fresh in the minds of the 55, and they will hopefully see that they were duped.

This man is not to be trusted. He is an utter khunt. He's the guy that repeatedly refused to have an inquest into Hillsborough, and now he wants to deny the Scottish people their democratic right to a future referendum if we were to vote for a party who had this as a manifesto pledge.

Need to get this publicised toward open minded Labour voters. They need to know about the quasi-fascist tendencies some of their party big wigs have.

There's nothing quasi about Jack Straw. He's a 100% khunt of a man. If he had his way nobody would be free to express an opinion that challenges that of the establishment, and he's made this viewpoint crystal clear several times over the years.

Roll on the cuts, the broken promises and Westminster legislation to outlaw future democracy in Scotland.

With this strategy in mind, at the next GE, with it seemingly nice and close between both Tory parties, should we encourage UKIP up here and encourage people to go from Red Tory to UKIP?

Force a Tory/UKIP coalition and imagine just how much that could f**k everyone up! Guaranteed Yes vote next time round....... ;-)

I'm not sure I could bring myself to vote for tory or ukip in ge, but I'll be voting out in the EU referendum, so that we can force the issue for another referendum to keep Scotland in the EU. hopefully the full weight of the EU machine will support Scotland against the seperatist UK.

Every single one of us should be voting SNP or Green at the next Westminster election.

We need to send the message that the 3 Westminster parties are dead north of the border

I seen a great Tweet from someone "Green and SSP chums let's do a deal. You vote SNP for Westminister and you'll be our list vote for Holyrood."

There is a huge issue here as we won't necessarily get another Edinburgh Agreement. If the Scottish Parliament can arguably legally hold a referendum, Westminster without an Edinburgh Agreement equivalent is not politically bound to accept it. It could be argued they weren't legally bound to accept this one owing to the flexible nature of the UK's unwritten constitution. Ideally the Scotland Act should be amended to enshrine a right of the people to a referendum based on a majority in the Scottish Parliament, but politically Westminster aint going to do that. We'll need to watch carefully for any amendments to the Scotland Act that strengthen Westminster control on referendums at the time of any (unlikely) further devolution. The media won't help us.

Would never happen. He would then have to outlaw referendums for Wales and Northern Ireland.

Even if they tried the Scottish Government would take this to the ECHR as I reckon human rights will have been breached in the right for a state to put the question of self determination to its people being denied.

I think the legislation on Northern Ireland's devolution permits legally binding referendums on secession. Not so in Scotland and Wales.

I think what Jack Straw is doing is the most stupidest thing he can do. It mocks democracy as well as the choice of the citizens.

If it does pass, It won't have much effect if the call for the referendum is high. Not unless they want another Spain/catalonia situation...and we all know how that is working well for Spain.
