Cricket World Cup qualifiers

Currently under way in Zimbabwe. Scotland doing well so far - beat Afghanistan, Nepal and Hong Kong, tied game with Zimbabwe in the first group stage. Playing UAE today in the 'super six' stage and well on the way to winning (Scotland 322/6 off their 50, UAE currently 183/6 off 35). Tough games to come against Ireland and the West Indies though. Only two teams go through to the World Cup as the ICC has reduced it to 10 teams. Really trying to widen the game so they are.

Good that they're making the worst test teams have to go through qualifying, although, as you say, it's poor that they've reduced the amount of teams playing in the finals. Surely a sixteen team tournament would work best, with four groups of four and the top one or two in each group progressing to a knockout phase. Seems they're widening the game by widening the gap between the top nations and the developing nations.

They did that previously in 2007, but Bangladesh knocked India out and Ireland knocked Pakistan out at the group stage.  India is where most of the money comes from in cricket, and sponsors were furious. So they rearranged things to try and prevent it happening again - 14 teams in two groups of seven - but that led to a long, boring tournament. So they have cut it back to ten - all in one big group with the top four going to a knockout. Which will be equally long and boring. They're an utter shower of idiots.

Afghanistan are giving themselves a good shot at beating the WIndies at the moment, which could make it interesting. Think it must be a rank wicket as the West Indies got 197/8 from 50 overs. Afghanistan 182/6 with 27 balls to come.

Seems you're right: India blamed the format on them being knocked out in 2007, despite the fact they lost two of their three games. Claiming the format isn't right because you weren't good enough and getting a change on the back of that just shows how corrupt the top sporting bodies are.

India has pretty much complete control over international cricket. Money talks.

Afghanistan have beaten the West Indies, puts that cat amongst the pigeons somewhat. Not necessarily good for us as we're playing WI in our last game, I was hoping they might have already qualified and take their foot off the gas by that time. No chance of that now.

We've just finished up against UAE, won by 73 runs. So the table looks like

Scotland P3 Pts5

WIndies P3 Pts4

Zimb'bwe P2 Pts3

Ireland P2 Pts2

Afghanstn P3 Pts2

UAE P3 Pts0

There was a couple of Afghan players in the Big Bash this year. Rashid Khan is a brilliant bowler and Nabi can bat.

The table looks good at the moment but there are decent cricketing countries yet to play.

With the West Indies being beaten by Afghanistan yesterday and Zimbabwe beating Ireland, there's no guarantee the West Indies will go through. If that happens watch the ICC change the rules again and not let any associates into the tournament in 2023.

Defeat for Scotland against Ireland leaves the table looking like this:

  1. Zimbabwe - Pld 3; Pts 5; NRR +0.727
  2. Scotland - Pld 4; Pts 5; NRR +0.315
  3. West Indies - Pld 3; Pts 4; NRR +0.666
  4. Ireland - Pld 4; Pts 4; NRR +0.474
  5. Afghanistan - Pld 3; Pts 2; NRR -0.023
  6. UAE - Pld 3; Pts 0; NRR -2.493

Zimbabwe play the West Indies tomorrow - a Zimbabwe win would probably be the best result, with them playing the UAE in the final game. Scotland's only remaining game is against the West Indies, which becomes a must win now, if we're to qualify for the World Cup.

Decent start but some sloppy fielding and a few wides mean it could have been better.

Windies 30/2 after 11. Gayle out for a duck. Useless prick. Get it up ye.

Zimbabwean crowd loving the piper playing The Sash in the background.

142-5 after 35 overs.

Got them all out for 198, so 199 required to win. Off to a pretty poor start with the bat but, touch wood, we seem to have steadied the ship a bit. Currently 56/3 (off 17 overs I think).

Forget it, it appears there is no chance.

The lbw just given there for the 5th wicket was an utter disgrace. Never mind missing the stumps, im not even sure it hit him in line.

Shocking stuff.

You didn't expect the ICC to allow the West Indies to not qualify, did you? You would've though the batter would've contested the decision though - not sure what the review rules are. Amazing to consider that had that not been given out, we'd have won the game and qualified. Just goes to show how small the gap is between the bottom test nations and the top 'associate' members.

Umpires decision is final where there's no DRS. Any significant arguing would've resulted in a fine.

what would the rules be then if only 1 team had batted, & it rained ?   games still being played today - so would have imagine like tennis should have rolled to next day

Can you imagine in Tennis if was rained off in 1st set, and guy was 5-4 up, on serve "ah ok, games a pokey - you win"    - Football if you are 5-0 up and rained off - tough luck - back to 0-0 next game

It would be a no result. Generally you don't play a one day match over two days because the wicket can change so much it makes it unfair.
