As an aside, those old enough will remember the furore over whether our home game against Belarus should go ahead in the light of Princess Diana's death. The Scottish press were doing their best to stoke it up and as part of this, the Daily Record set up a phone in poll - this was before mass Internet adoption. It was basic stuff - phone this number if you think the game should go ahead, phone this other number if you don't. It was pretty basic stuff, you rang the number, it picked up and you got a recorded message saying that your vote had registered. Nothing to stop you calling as many times as you wanted apart from your phone bill and getting RSI from hitting redial. A friend of mine who worked at the time in IT for a large Edinburgh based financial institution, that may or may not have been RBS, connected up a modem and wrote a simple autodial script to call the "game should go ahead"number every 10 seconds, then left it running for 24 hours. It's finished now. They seemed to let it go on for another day but all that happened was Mhairi stormed Into second place. They probably decided it was best to call it quits.
