First job for mcleish....

Mcleish should be clear.... was he asked, if he declines, is it because he isn’t ready to make a choice or because he sees himself as English.  I believe he has said in the past he wants to play for Scotland.  By the way, fair play to him if he says he is English and wants to play for them.

So does anyone actually know what the kid feels?

Does he consider himself Scottish or English.

Eck needs to call him up. But prior to that Eck needs to have a word with the lads Dad and then Fergie, as he is still a God at Man U and make sure there is no doubt.

Not a hope in hell he will commit to Scotland, unless he feels a possible 100 caps for us is better than two caps for England. Even then he might think he is good enough to establish himself in the England team.

Depends if he thinks he is English or Scottish....

Was it not something to do with mourinho's ongoing thing with pogba, using mctominay to have a go at him basically.

Am not convinced the lad will want to be picked by Scotland. For someone who has grown up in Manchester with English mates presumably and given scotlands terrible record over the past 20 years I can't see it.

Why is Mourinho specifically saying this in an interview that is nothing to do with Scotland? Why should he think of McLeish when talking about McTominay? I think he's been speaking to McTominay and he's mentioned he wants to play for us, that's why he's said to McLeish to act on it. I also think the 'England is missing' comment means they are going to miss out on him.

It's probably not going to happen.  He's waiting on an England call up.  He was supposedly asked to be part of the squad by McKay for the Holland game but said he "wanted to establish himself in the Man Utd team first".

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that an established first team, British born Man Utd player will eventually get called up to the England squad.  We're a fall back unfortunately

This is what I originally thought, but as I previously said, bit strange that Mourinho brings up the subject about getting McLeish to contact McTominay on a MOTD interview. If there was no chance, Mourinho wouldn't have bought up the subject

By that token we should have had Aidan Mcgeady who opted for grandparents' country.

Ireland have actually been qualifying for tournaments though so choosing Ireland over Scotland is probably an easier choice than choosing Scotland over England.

A large number of Scots of Irish descent already support Ireland over Scotland so if McGeady was already an Ireland supporter his choice was easy.

Eh?!  It's nothing to do with opting for Grandparents' country its about opting for the country most likely to qualify for a major tournament.  ROI had recently done so when McGeady made his choice and were more likely to again at the time (which they did).  McTominay is hedging his bets in hope that England come calling

Does anyone know that for sure though?  McLeish should ask him and publicise the answer.  If he wants to play for England then we forget about him and move on with no crawling back to him in 5 years if he turns out not to be good enough for them.

We can take some comfort in Ethan Hamilton looking like a very good prospect. He’s not where McTominay is but he’s 2 years younger and knocking on the door.

I see what you are saying but it is a tricky one. If McLeish were to ask and McTominay turns him down and it is then made public I guarantee a load of crap and angst would be thrown in the young man's direction which would be very unfair. A more diplomatic comment may be needed by McLeish such as he is not an option. Perhaps a fully frank statement like saying he feels more of a desire to play for England due to him being born there may be palatible to most.
