Toepoke
Tonight's results mean they need a miracle from Gibraltar. If they'd hung on for a point last Thursday they'd be safely in the play-offs. Us, Slovakia and Slovenia managed to slit each others' throats this week...
weekevie04
Good. The 3rd on goal difference is a bit of a sickner if not that lack lustre preformance on Sunday. And it's good to know that if we had a suprior goal difference, we were simply not good enough.

Having said that, no other team with 2 losses or less is heading anywhere other than Russia or the playoffs.

Wales lost one game and are out. Draws killed them, same as us really.

Mox
Shame really, a player of Hamsiks quality deserves to play on that kind of stage.

I was sitting next to a Slovakia fan on Friday on flight to Gatwick, they were far from happy with him to say the least, used some rather colourful language!! Barney Rubble
Are they seriously the worst runner-up?

adamntg
They're the worst runners up. And Scotland the next best - can't see anybody else that didn't finish second with 18 points.
Tartan Chris
A very average national team. Scotland have been in the worst runners up group before, wasn't the 2010 world cup also the same?

Norway missed out similiar in that had we beat Norway at home we would have got a playoff then as I think there was another group on 11 points. Tartan Chris
Yes group was Holland, Scotland, Norway, Macedonia and Iceland. Iceland were nowhere near as good then as now and 6 points were taken. Norway home game was Iwelumo missing an open goal. As ever there was a rubbish result that killed qualification, 1-0 defeat in Macedonia. They were easily beaten at Hampden. If you look back last 15 years that was arguably the easiest group to get a play off spot from but Burley just wasn't good enough.

That campaign was a shambles even from the fixture meeting, for some reason Gordon Smith thought it was a good idea to play in Macedonia on a summer's afternoon. Worse still everybody in the room somehow thought the play-offs were in October instead of November and therefore arranged the final group games in September 2009, meaning the group was complete a month before the others and everybody else knew what to do to beat the runner up in our group (Norway). Macedonia missed about 4 good chances that night, Gordon was excellent. Cracking Faddy goal to win it.
