Named Person Act
MacWalka replied to phart's topic in Anything Goes - Other topics not covered elsewhere
What the hell is minor about the legislation? It's a pretty substantial landmark piece of legislation that will affect everyone born in this country from the moment it becomes active, anyone who is a parent or guardian and anyone who deals with children. The aims of the legislation are benign in that it aims to protect children. An admirable intention. The actual implementation of it is horrendous though and therein lies the problem. -

I'm now halfway through the White Luck Warrior. It's taken me a while to get this far, can be a bit of a slog to read at times. -

Still a lot to get through seemingly but the show has cut a lot of characters this series so it's certainly been streamlined for the finish now. -

Great last couple of episodes. Good to see confirmation of the R+L=J theory. -

Ah OK. I knew about the Krung Thep and the really long version of it but had thought that it was just Bangkok renamed, I hadn't appreciated that it was a different site completely. Although these days both sites have converged in one city. -
Scottish Cup Final - Hibs v Rangers

I haven't read it but given it involves Wings talking about football, it'll inevitably be utter guff. -

Sort of true. Bangkok is the capital, it's just not actually called Bangkok. The real name of the city is somewhat overly long so everyone just calls it Bangkok. -
Poor choice. You don't know what you're missing.

Game Of Thrones

I think when/if the next book comes out, Jon's rebirth will be different but yes, it's been obvious for a while. They're obviously going to use the Bran visions to show flashbacks to the rebellion and The Tower of Joy. I guess Howland Reed might not appear in present day then. It's interesting to note which storylines get completely cut from the TV series though as they're clearly not that important in the book. It was also interesting to note the Greyjoys are back this series so book readers will know what that will set off. Indicates to me that the story there has some importance. -

Indeed, if only SNP supporters could be as critical of their own party and memebers. -

That's actually a decent read for describing that a crowd effectively behaves like a fluid. Similar effects are seen in heavy traffic too. -

a duck. Greens will get my vote by default then on the List. Constituency vote gets the willy treatment. -

Please tell me that fudd Alex Neil isn't on the list vote too? #novotesSNP for me then. -
Hillsborough Inquest

I couldn't find anything. There's a Guardian article that has a very good summary of events, who did what and when but there does seem to be this big black hole around him during that time. His predecessor used to check traffic flow and walk the roads around the stadium during that window before a game. -

That's my feeling too. Least worst option. Also tempted to draw a phallus on this paper too. -

In terms of 1, there are a few things to consider. There were massive delays due to roadworks on the road from Liverpool that day so a lot of buses arrived later than normal. This resulted in a large number of supporters arriving late and will obviously rush from the bus to the stadium. The layout of the road to the ground and into the turnstyles is effectively a funnel so at the start of the road people would have enough space but the closer to the ground and into the ground itself, the space per person gets narrower which results in a crush. In a crowd, the only people that can control what the do are the people at the back. Anyone in the crowd itself gets carried along. The people at the back will have absolutely no idea what's going on ahead of them. The rate of people arriving meant that as soon as someone was at the back of the crowd, more people came in behind them. So imagine you are walking up to the back of the crowd pretty quickly as your bus was late and you want to reach the stadium in time for kick-off. You reach the back of the crowd, realise it's a bit packed and slow down as you reach the person in front. By the time you've slowed and reached the person in front, there are people behind you that have reached you and you're now part of the crowd being swept along. This will happen in just about every heavy crowd without crowd control measures. I've been in crowds where I've been swept along at gigs, festivals, football and there has been times where I've struggled for breath. In these cases, people didn't die because there weren't massive fences at the front to crush them and they weren't locked into an area without escape. Every venue and event including football stadia, gig venues, street festivals, cinemas etc. have measures in place to prevent issues from heavy crowding. Hillsborough also had measures in place, on that day, they weren't enacted. The idea that people in a crowd can be blamed for behaving exactly how every crowd in the world behaves is frankly ridiculous. There were no more people in the stadium than tickets and there was no evidence of excessive drunkenness. -

I can't believe that this thread about such a monumental decision in British legal history has degraded into talking about Wings Over Scotland.........Actually I can. This place is bizarre at times. -
Holyrood Election - Second Vote

It truly is, especially the lack of scrutiny on the SNP Government leading to whataboutery of Labour etc. -

Holyrood Election - Second Vote

Seems most politcally active folk these days view everything as indy vs uniony or in rare cases left vs right. I honestly don't know how to vote this year, the SNP haven't done enough to retain my vote but no one else has done enough to win it either. Plus my local SNP candidate is Alex Neil and he definitely isn't getting my vote. I'll probably just draw a veiny triumphant jizzing cock on my constituency paper and vote for whoever I feel like on the list paper. -

I honestly don't know who I'm going to vote for in either vote this year. Not one party impresses me enough to properly WIN my vote. The SNP just have not impressed me this term but I would normally just vote for them in the constituency vote then vote someone else in the list. However, Alex Neil my local MSP and I just can't bring myself to vote for him.
